http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/mo ... s-parents/

During a talk with Chris Rock for the Tribeca Film Festival, a kid named Kyle in the audience asked J.J. Abrams the only question that mattered: Who are Rey's parents? Abrams's response:

[Reveal] Spoiler:
"Rey's parents are not in Episode VII. So I can't possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too."
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

the Darth Vader comic is ending at #25 and will be replaced by an anthology. Sad to see it go but I like the idea of seeing spotlights on different characters in the universe.

I'm glad that they had a particular end game in mind for it. I really didn't want to have them try to cram 100 issues into the 3-year gap between Eps IV and V. Vader has learned basically everything he needs to find out to set the stage for Ep V (Luke's parentage, Palpatine's lies), and the rest would just be spinning wheels to sell books. My fear was that Vader would have more confrontations with Luke, diluting the gravitas of their battle on Bespin.

My guess is that one of the remaining things to wrap up in this series will be for Vader to kill Tagge (who we don't see in Ep V, so he's presumably dead) and take over command of the Executor, which we saw under construction in the last issue. (That last issue was awesome, BTW. The conversation between Sidious and Vader was some of the most enlightening dialogue between Sith in any SW canon.)

One thing I've found interesting about the new canon is how the authors (especially Claudia Gray in Lost Stars, which is amazing) have discussed the impact that the destruction of the first Death Star and other things such as Vader's penchant for killing officers have left the Empire with a shortage of talented officers in the upper ranks by the time of Ep VI. Basically everyone fought to get assigned to the Death Star, especially the promising junior officers.

that's a very smart idea that i've never thought about: that the behemoth organization that is the Empire would have a shortage of officers due to the decision of pooling talent in one area combined with DVs penchant for violence at his subordinates.

My gut tells me this movie will be better - a lot better - than TFA.

Weren't you a hater/not a fan of TFA? Isn't that a low bar for you?

Yes, and yes.

But I am also objectively correct: TFA is a derivative fanboy-service pastiche of the original trilogy, so my bar should be universal for everyone.

That's literally subjective, not objective.

I am fully aware of why you would say this, but...

Not all evaluations of art are subjective. I teach literature. If someone turned TFA in as a paper, I'd write it up for plagiarism. It really isn't "subjective" that the plot of TFA follows a New Hope almost blow-for-blow, except where it throws a little of ESB & ROTJ in, nor is it subjective why: the filmmaker and his bosses were terrified - terrified - of making something that would be associated with the prequels. That's why part of their very clever publicity campaign for the film stressed over and over and over that they were using practical effects as much and wherever possible, etc.

These aren't subjective observations, but verifiable facts.

So, the conclusion - that the film is a derivative pastiche of its predecessors - isn't really "subjective" either. Whether one likes it or not, now that is subjective.

You don't like it. That's fine. There is a value judgement assigned to your 'objective' description. You know this.
