I just have a different feeling than many, which I've expressed many times. Star Wars 1-6 (yes, the prequels are included) are analogous to a novel by a single author. Obviously, that's an imperfect analogy, because movies are collaborative and Lucas had a lot of help, but the bottom line is that these films were based on the ideas and vision of one guy.

Non-George Lucas Star Wars are like - granted, elaborate and high production value - fanfiction. If I write a Harry Potter story because I like Harry Potter, it's not the same, even if it is good. And of course, most fanfiction is not good, because it is too imitative of what the producer likes about the source material. That is exactly, to a T, what this newest movie turned out to be.

If J. J. Abrams is some great director, he should consider directing something that isn't just a rehash. In general, I'd rather see all these creative people create rather than imitate.

And lastly, although George Lucas was never shy about about monetizing Star Wars down to the last available nickel, turning it into pure commodity - a label to be slapped onto any space opera script already floating around out there, releasing anything and everything as "Star Wars" - is a sad road to go down. You can say it doesn't affect the originals, but - yes it does. It dilutes them, if not for old farts like me than for future generations. Maybe the idea that Star Wars was more than just a way to make gobs and gobs of money was always an illusion, but if there was any doubt, this development - which I had anticipated for years but I always thought it would be Lucas' kids, not Disney, doing the cashing in - removes all doubt.

The counter to all of this might be something like James Bond. Here is a character who debuted in novels, was successfully translated to film, and then movies sort of took over and now successful new Bond stories can continue to be made by all kinds of people. But I think Harry Potter is the better analogy. The Harry Potter books (which I have never read) are by one author and ultimately tell one story. If, years later, J. K. Rowling sells the rights to the character and then Hollywood starts generating all kinds of new Harry Potter stuff... It's not part of the same story, it's an add-on purely to make more money.

Meh.

The S2 finale was tonight. Just... Holy shit.

I can't believe it got split up into two volumes to buy (at least on google). Middle son and I are planning a binge on the end of the season tonight.

Although, Vox pre-ordered Force Awakens for us last night, and Google is making it available tomorrow.

Not seeing the episode yet, idk. But all of Rebels has been satisfying to watch. More so than Clone Wars.

Did you watch Clone Wars? If not, then I don't know how much of an impact it would have.

I've always been more of a Star Trek guy than a Star Wars guy but the recent cinematic developments may be swaying me.

Houshphandzadeh wrote:whatever happened with the Borg

In 2378, a crippling blow was delivered to the Borg when Voyager discovered one of their transwarp hubs and destroyed it, killing the Borg Queen (again) and devastating the Unicomplex in the process. During this battle, the Borg were infected with a neurolytic pathogen, which was carried by an alternate future version of Admiral Janeway and designed to disrupt the hive mind, to bring chaos to order. It was this pathogen that killed the Borg Queen, and allowed Voyager to destroy the transwarp hub.

Worth noting that the idea of "infecting" the Borg was used in a TNG episode, but Voyager recycled a lot of TNG ideas.
