I don't know why anyone thought that wouldn't happen.

I saw a talking head predict a few weeks ago that Disney's stock would take a hit if TFA had an underwhelming opening. I laughed very hard.

The worst of the six films--Attack of the Clones--made $310M domestically in 2002 dollars. It made $650M worldwide. An "underwhelming" total worldwide gross equivalent to that of Ep II would still be three-quarters of a billion 2015 dollars. And that's probably not even a plausible worst-case scenario simply due to the fact that the prime generation of SW fans (late-30s to mid-40s) finally has disposable income and kids of their own, so even a mediocre Ep VII will do better than the low of Ep II. (Ep I made over a billion worldwide and Ep III made $850M.)

Combine that with Blu-Ray and merchandising, not to mention the inevitable billion dollars for Eps VIII, IX, and the anthology movies and the Blu-Ray/merchandising for them, and the idea that Disney made a bad investment is just absurd. And that's not even talking about the upcoming Disney Star Wars park or the revenue from owning ILM.

I have to ask my parents how much they bought our Disney stock for in ~86.

Disneys ability to market had to of been severely undervalued.

I think it was more that the person was the Skip Bayless of market analysts.

There's also something to be said for the fact that no other company was capable of doing what Disney did with Star Wars. They got a bargain because they were the entire marketplace, in all reality. As if Warner Bros or Viacom could do this?

In today's stock dollars, probably about 3 bucks. My parents bought me one share when I was born and I think it's 12 now (after a 3/1 and 4/1 split).

Well, I think the stock price already has a "successful Star Wars Ep VII" expectation built into it. I think if the movie doesn't hit (say) $1.5B (and maybe as high as $2B), the stock will take a hit because it's overinflated with the expectations of massive profits from the film. The company will do fine either way, though, as I think they can withstand it if the stick drops $5 or 10 a share due to a "disappointing" TFA.

That said, Disney's main stock concern right now comes from ESPN losing subscribers (and thus revenue) due to cord cutters. ESPN generates the largest profits of any division of the company.

To be fair, I don't think I've ever seen anyone say that Disney made a poor or even questionable investment. The questions were more about how quickly they would recoup the investment, not whether it would happen.

I actually think that Disney is the perfect location for Star Wars given how the company has the synergy to monetize the property -- not only the movies, but the toys and other related merchandise, plus potential TV shows and obviously the theme parks. Seriously, no company has the merchandising connections and strength of Disney. And the entire "fantasy" aspect of the Force and SW plus it being somewhat of a family friendly IP melds very well with the Disney reputation.

This Droid Tales show on Disney XD is adorable. Perfect for introducing my kids to SW before going to Disney!

Taking the second group of nieces and nephews completely fell apart. Half of them have jobs (or a husband in the one's case). Looks like I'm doing movie theater gift cards. Bleh.

This is great, I'm going to do this.

So I finally got around to this, and goddamn Episode II is terrible. It may be worse than I (though I haven't seen the latter in close to 10 years).

Just finished Jedi, completing my viewing of Machete Order prior to going to see The Force Awakens.

My new thought is that the scores of the original trilogy are collectively the greatest ever, and (obviously) John Williams' finest work. Vader's entrance in Empire set to The Imperial March is just stunning. The main Star Wars theme is also excellent but that to me kind of blends in with Williams' other work.

For those who don't listen to Kids Korner (or probably for people like me who don't read the thread, since it was probably here before).
