yeah, but that's been the battle since spring training anyway. he's gotta learn how to throw his off-speed stuff for strikes and work backwards. it's gonna be a tough battle until he can cut down on walks with those pitches.

so why exactly is halladay's arm slot lower if not because of injury?

Yeah. It's not injury in the acute sense of the term but a billion innjngs and pitches takes huge wear and tear on your entire shoulder/arm/body

if i understand the physics of pitching, the lower arm slot should actually improve his 2seam fastball (sinker), but it will negatively impact his cutter. the cutter is basically a slider, and i think the lower the arm slot, the more difficult to turn the ball over and create glove side (in to a LHB for a RHP) movement. as an extreme example, think about most guys who throw side arm. they have a real difficult time making the ball run inside to a LHB, because the natural movement of the ball is in to a RHB and away from a lefthanded batter. Most guys who throw from a lower arm slot also have a tough time throwing a 12-6 breaking ball, again, lower release point, more difficult to turn over. the other night, halladay's breaking ball was much more 11-5/10-4, which is why it seemed like he couldn't throw it for strikes. the changeup shouldn't be impacted as much as the breaking ball and cutter.

if he can't throw from a high 3/4 arm slot anymore, he needs to scrap the cutter. hes not going to be able to locate it, and when it backs up, it becomes a BP fastball. if he throws more turbo sinkers and changeups, he should be able to limit the damage. but the cutter was what made him elite, and im sure hes convinced he can still figure it out.

He looked like he was overthrowing a lot of pitches the other night. He couldn't locate and too many of his pitches had no life.

If he can regain the command of his control he can still be effective I'd guess. Right now he's a mess though.
