Roy Halladay

Your Bobby Crosby mention reminds me of a Peter Gammons incident a few years ago where he predicted in the preseason that Crosby would be an M.V.P. candidate that year.

Not so much.

Then again, he also predicted a few years prior to that, also in the preseason, the Phillies would miss Chad Ogea after his 1999 outing.

Does he still have his no-trade clause?

Roy Halladay rhp
3 years/$60M (2011-13), plus 2014 option

* 3 years/$60M (2011-13), plus 2014 option
o signed extension with Philadelphia 12/16/09
o 11:$20M, 12:$20M, 13:$20M, 14:$20M option
o 2014 option guaranteed with all of the following:
+ 225 IP in 2013,
+ 415 IP in 2012-13, and
+ Halladay is not on disabled list at end of 2013 season

Was his NTC due to being a 10-and-5 guy?

Previous cohorts of Phillies management would have been desperate to keep any "playoff hero." I'm old enough to remember well the contracts Giles gave Daulton and Dykstra after 1993; those guys were "part of the family," and they were paid for what they'd done rather than what they were likely to do going forward. Those deals crippled the team for five years.

While I think there's some place for sentiment and even (to a very limited extent, in very particular circumstances) "rewarding" a player for past performance, on balance I much prefer Smuggles' approach. The team "owed" Lee nothing beyond his paycheck and not to denigrate him. They did approach him about an extension. We don't know if they offered 3/$60m, but if they didn't I suspect it's because they didn't value him as highly as they did Halladay--which, again, is a decision on the merits.

Moyer?

In that I wanted him back in 2009, yeah. Two year contract? Fuck no.

“With Roy, it has never been about the money,” agent Greg Landry said. “It’s about being happy. This is still a great deal, but money is not what drives Roy.”

Take a look at that, Cliff. Enjoy waking up to a damp and depressing city, only to net some more money in a year. Fucker.

Roy doesn't take this deal if he hadn't already had a big pay day. The situations aren't comparable.

Well he is charming, isn't he? It is an unusually giddy thought to think that the best pitcher in baseball wanted to be a PHILLIES that badly. Not a contract, not the Phillies or half a dozen other teams, a PHILLIES.

I remember when I felt good that Kent Bottenfield really wanted to be a Phillies. Puts it all in perspective, really.

Totally. Also, how can you be mad at Cliff Lee? Apparently, we were never going to have both Lee and Halladay, it was always going to be one or the other. Cliff Lee didn't make the choice, the Phillies did.

I've got nothing but love for Cliff Lee. His 2009 postseason... man, what a thing of endless beauty.

Yeah, I'm past all the consternation now, and letting it sink in. Unfortunately, I didn't really enjoy the press conference yesterday the way I could have/should have, because I was thinking about what might have been. Happy trails, Cliff; maybe we get you back at the deadline if Seattle flounders

And welcome Roy Halladay, the guy me and most people wanted badly in the first place and were a little disappointed we didn't get in the first place. So glad you wanted to be a Phillies, because we really wanted you to be a Phillies too!

OK ... already making plans to go to Washington for Opening Day. They wouldn't do anything crazy and throw Hamels first, would they?
