I have heard SS and C....FWIW the Angels have some decent options there that are potentially expendable, between Aybar/Wood and Napoli/Conger

I'm not sure I get the Aybar love. He's not young (26 in Jan.). His offensive upside is Placido Polanco. He's already arbitration eligible. Solid player, I guess, but the idea that he's some kind of game-changer in a trade seems utterly ridiculous to me.

I wouldnt think Tor. would have any interest in Napoli. Very good hitter, but he plays C like a DH, is 28, and not cheap.

Moving Blanton's contract wouldn't hurt either. If we have Lee-Halladay-Hamels as the top three I wouldn't care who they have in the other two spots

I take your point, but I do care a bit more about the #'s 4 and 5. I rule out trading Blanton because I'm assuming Happ would go in any Halladay trade, leaving our 4 and 5 starters as Moyer and Kendrick.

But, heck, if it took that scenario to get Halladay with an acceptable extension, I wouldn't slit my wrists!

Bastian:

Don't count the Phillies out in the Roy Halladay sweepstakes. They pushed hard for Doc in July and are quietly still in the mix.

I was going to buy a new cellphone whenever it turned out I had the money, but if the Phillies end up with Halladay, I'm going to end up with a Halladay jersey and two cans with a string running between them.

I don't really agree. They can always move a guy like Blanton or Victorino. There's no reason why those moves would have to happen before Halladay (if Halladay happened this week, they could even non-tender them (of course, that would be stupid, but I'm just saying)).

Now, it certainly could impact your leverage if teams know you have to get rid of a Blanton or a Victorino, but I think there is enough of a market for both of those players that you will have multiple bidders regardless. In fact, the one thing I wouldn't do if I were Rube would be to trade Blanton or Victorino before I was 100% certain I was getting Halladay.

I dont buy the budget cap being at 140, no questions asked.

I think 140 is where they told Rube to build the team towards.

Right now, he can field a 25 man roster with 140M that doesn't include Halladay.

And I'm sure that he knows whether or not adding 10M to that is possible. And im sure it is.

I think they'll basically say "yes, you can trade for him, but either Blanton or Moyer has to go", and if the Mariners don't want Moyer back, taking most of his salary, then he can move Blanton for a prospect or two. Is Randy Wolf a whole lot better than Blanton? Wolf just got 9M x 3, Blanton will make less than that this year.

If they subtract Blanton and add Halladay, from a payroll perspective that's like, what, 7-8M? I have a hard time believing Monty would nix that, especially given the likely income from 2 or 3 more playoff series in October.

Also, if the Phillies are struggling in July and don't look likely to make the playoffs, they'll be able to trade Lee or Halladay for prospects and save the salary for the rest of the year. The $140M or $150M isn't paid up front in March.

Maybe Phight On! knows a guy that can "convince" Jamie Moyer into retirement?
you sure do seem to have a lot of time on your hands to be on this forum? Do you have a job? Are you a shut-in?

Exactly. And Brad Fucking Penny just got a $9 million contract. Blanton also almost certainly gets you a comp pick next year if he leaves a FA, so Blanton really = Blanton and a pick in the 40s of the 2011 draft. That's real value.

I don't believe for a second that the 2010 budget will prevent a Halladay deal. If it doesn't happen it will be because they don't want to deplete the system of the replacements require for guys who are coming up in FA after 2010.

And much like we discussed this past summer, you have to look at it as "These prospects for Roy Halladay and two draft picks". Im sure he'd love a contract extension, but he hasn't said its a prerequisite to any trade. He wants to win a World Series. And he wants to get paid. But in that order. So if he comes to Philly, I'm sure he'd be told "hey, we'd love to have you back, but our focus is on winning the World Series this year, and if you want to talk extension, we'll listen, and we're interested, but we can't make any promises other than to be fair". Its a win-win for Halladay, because if he comes here and wins a ring, it won't hurt his free agency case. But no one is really going to look at his numbers before he hits free agency, because everyone knows what hes capable of.

The Phillies can afford to trade 2 good prospects + Happ for him, because if he walks, and Lee walks, they are looking at 4 first/comp round picks in the 2011 draft. Those 4 picks have tremendous value, when added to their own first round pick. And because Halladay and Lee are likely to sign with good teams, those picks will be true, unprotected first rounders.
