Patience is fine if there truly is no other bidder. But

* I have a hard time believing Halladay would nix a deal to Boston, even if Philly is his preferred choice. Halladay, Beckett and Lester = game over

* Ricciardi is enough of a douchenozzle to not make a deal just to puff out his chest, especially if he knows hes going to get canned, which he is. If he makes a bad trade, it impacts future job opportunities.

I want Rube to make the best deal possible. But in my head, Drabek, Happ and Brown is fair for Halladay, which is what the Blue Jays allegedly offered. If that deal is no longer available because we waited and the Red Sox came in and made a legit offer that beats ours, then it backfired.

Part of me would like to see the Phils trade for Lee about 3:59 on Friday for some "lesser" prospects, and leave the douche in Toronto holding the bag.

FWIW, Jays beat guy on XM today said it wasn't JP's call to make. JP would collect the deals and present them to Beeston for the final decision.

I hear ya, but I'm enjoying this. My favorite team is the WFC, has a talented and deep farm, and they're in the news every day in their quest to land one of the top 3 pitchers on the planet. And if that isn't enough, they keep piling up the wins.

These are the salad days, gentlemen. Relish them.

The bad news: Washburn has been great tonight.
The worse news: Damn near every out has been a fly ball. And several of them were long ones. In Safeco.

Yeah there was an article written, I think yesterday, where they basically said that its going to be a group decision. Beeston carries a lot of weight in the front office.

I believe him. JPR's a lame duck - there's no way he has full authority to make that deal. And that's why I've said all along that Beeston will pick up the phone and call Gillick to give the Phillies a final opportunity.

I initially misread "Boston" for "Beeston"...

I understand what you're saying, but does Boston really not get a last chance to top our deal? I really doubt that the Phils will make a deal and JP won't bother to call Boston to see if they'll top it. And vice versa: we'll get a chance to top any deal Boston offers. That's why i don't think it hurts to wait. If Boston is involved, they will be able to outbid us and it will come down to if JP wants to trade within the division. Right now, the price is high, but I don't think it will go higher. It could come down.

You are assuming that Jays ownership is allowing him to make this deal on his own. I seriously doubt that is the case. JPR will have to go back to Rube to see if he will top the Sox deal and that is a nice position to be in.
This will get done if the Phillies want it to.

Well, thats true. I really am trying to hold out hope that Gillick's underground in Toronto is the x factor, and that it can still get done. But I'm fully prepared for it to not happen.

Edes is a Boston Globe guy, so the leak is coming from Boston. There are really two possible reasons for it:

1.) It's true.

2.) It's orchestrated BS between TE and JP in order to (a) get Cleveland to think the Red Sox are going to use Bucholtz to get Halladay instead of Lee and Martinez and (b) get the Phillies to think that they need to increase their offer for Halladay.

The unintended but foreseeable consequence of such a leak is that it pushes the Phils and Indians closer together.

Accordingly, I think the leak is accurate, Halladay is a Red Sox, and we're going to overpay for Jarrod Washburn in a panic trade on Friday afteroon.

I like the point about how the Phillies will get a chance to top it. This makes me feel better. I'd been so sure, but an unusual combination of exhaustion, weariness, and seemingly bad news caused my faith to slip momentarily. Hopefully Baseba'al or whoever can forgive me.

...and Trent drags me right back down again. I'd made it so far being resolute. Why am I breaking under the pressure now?

As agonizing as this is it really is the best possible position. It is so nice to see the Phillies in a position of power that we have never seen before. Like I said in my last post, they are going to have the say in where Halladay goes (if it is between them and the Red Sox). If they choose to not deal these guys and go with plan B or even C I will be disappointed but it is better than being outbid like in previous years.

I really hate this.

But that's how I feel too

I don't want Washburn at all. Unless its for some nominal prospect. But the Yankees are interested, so hopefully they do the dirty work for us.
