Halladay VII: Rock out with your Doc out

Postby scottdg » Tue Jul 28, 2009 15:15:17

Suppose it is true, it still sounds to me as if Happ, Halladay, Brown is not that far off as a whole. I am of the belief that they would have made this deal if it were Friday already. Maybe a little tweaking gets this done.

Ok I'll give Toronto Drabek, Happ, Brown, Carrasco, Savery, Gose, Donald, and Marson. And some cash.
I would rather see you lose than win myself

And here we are playing with our dicks in our Moms' basements over the J.A. Happs of the world while the Red Sox are busy texting pictures of their huge one directly to JP's Treo

So Drabek and Taylor for Washburn is going to burn the inside of our collective anal crevices, eh?

IF this rumor is true, I'm sure JP will come back to the Phillies, because trading Halladay to the Red Sox sounds like a good way to get himself lynched in Toronto. So, the Phillies will have a last shot at it.

The thing is, I'm inclined to believe that this is yet one more bluff, and that, if it isn't, the talent package we'd need to offer to top it just isn't worth it. Would I do Happ/Drabek/Brown? I'd hold my nose, but I'd do it. I'd even throw in one more player, if it was necessary from among our B-list prospects. If that's not enough, oh well.

And I think you have to be careful about getting hoodwinked here by a good bluff.

I don't think that will happen. JPR is going to come back to the Phillies before finalizing anything with Boston. If he goes to Rube and doesn't have a deal in place from Boston he runs the risk of really screwing himself over. I am not going to believe this one just yet.

If this is a bluff, it is a good one. Either way I am now smelling end game. There are three possibilities:

1. It's true, and the Jays take it because the Phillies won't match.
2. It's a bluff, but the Phillies bite, and meet the Jays asking price of Happ/Drabek/Brown, perhaps with another player thrown in.
3. It's a bluff, and the Phillies don't bite before 3:00 tomorrow. JP then has to decide to start Halladay or realize he's lost and make a call. So he calls Ruben, Rube wins, Phils give up something less than Happ/Drabek/Brown

This does kind of confirm that it us just us and Boston with "serious" interest at this point. So really, it's us. I'd have to think JP would need a 20%+ premium on any Boston deal in order to trade him within the division

Thing is, Buccholz might in himself be that premium over anything the Phils can offer.

if it's a bluff then wouldnt the Sox be adamant about denying it so their division rival doesnt get a higher return?

I agree. And the Red Sox have no incentive to drive up the price for Halladay. They'd probably prefer (if they don't trade for him themselves) that Halladay gets dumped into the NL for minimal return. So if it's not true, then I expect this to be shot down soon.

Dammit, I don't even care about "winning" the trade. Just make a fair deal and get this shit over with.

People need to relax, and think about this.

Who is leaking this story? Definitely not the Red Sox. Not only do they have nothing to gain from this, but if they somehow didn't land Halladay and had to go after Lee, you can bet Shapiro would be asking for that same package immediately. Toronto is the only team that has any reason to put an offer out like this, and what a surprise... It comes just hours from Douch bag's soft deadline for other teams to "blow him away"!

This is the same reporter who told us the Angels offered Wood, Weaver +. Who do you suppose told him that? Stark, Rosenthal, Heyman, and basically every baseball writer in the country said it never happened.

This rumor is BS.
