I also heard he said he would rather field a competitive team year after year then win another world series and then fall off a cliff. sigh

all posturing

Ask yourself - why is Montgomery making the rounds today? JodyMac and DNL? For what reason? I really think they are close

I don't know why he is making the rounds. that's a good question

That Occam fella suggests it's because producers from those shows called and asked for someone from the FO and they decided it should be him, not Smuggles. But who knows.

That would certainly make it worthwhile to me. Scutaro is an ideal supersub type guy, could start at 3B, though he won't play the OF like Brunt can in a pinch.

I love the idea of getting Scutaro as our righty bench bat/supersub. I'd take Bautista too, though I wouldn't add as much for him.

So with this news, it appears its

1. He stays in Toronto
2. He goes to Phillies

I think the best course of action is as follows. You make 2 offers to Toronto

A.) Taylor, Carrasco, Donald, and then either Marson/D'Arnaud, + one lesser pitching prospect that doesn't include Knapp, Worley, Stutes, May or Pettibone

B.) Drabek + Donald + Marson/D'Arnaud + lesser prospect

If they want Drabek so badly, then they get less secondary pieces. If they want more pieces, then they take Taylor as the centerpiece.

If they honestly feel they will get more for Halladay this winter, then so be it. I think Roy wants to go, and he wants to go now. If they choose to drag it out this winter, he may just say "forget it, I love Toronto, I'm staying and then im walking in free agency".

Its a big gamble for JP. Id love Halladay, obviously. But Toronto only has a limited amount of leverage, because they have very fewer buyers. When the market dries up, you're holding your asset and its only worth what someone is willing to give you for it. If we can't get Halladay now, there's no point in trading for a much lesser guy. I'd call on Lee, I'd call on Haren, but you address it again this winter. This winter you might be able to get a healthy Jake Peavy on the cheap.

Monty made the same rounds at almost this exact time last year and then news broke that the Phillies came in second in the CC Sabathia sweepstakes. So take that for what it is worth.

we were never seriously linked to sabathia like we have been with halladay, and we were certainly never called the front runners.

the situations are different, i hope the organization realizes how different they are

Yeah. My fear is he's making the rounds for PR purposes to cushion the blow when they don't get Halladay.

I meant that as a positive. Monty indicated there was a willingness to try, and try they did. Seems like the same message this time around, only we are in the driver's seat, unlike last year.

Title of this thread should be: "Today's Tea Leaves."

I'm at the point now where I really don't care if they don't get him. Maybe it's the euphoria from the WFC, but I just want them to be a part of this. If they're in on it and decide the price is too damn much, I'm OK with that.

I think since the Phils have the most to offer they'll make Amaro aware of any deals they're thinking of taking, just to see if they can get a little more. It wouldn't make sense to leave that part of the negotiations out of it

btw, i have an article up at BP today about halladay-- http://baseballprospectus.com/article.p ... cleid=9263

in short, riccardi would be foolish to wait to trade halladay. to a team that is on the cusp of the playoffs but not necessarily in, halladay is worth about $15 million more than he is to the blue jays.
