Phillies honor Harry Kalas by displaying jacket, shoes at each game

NEW YORK - In an anonymous wooden locker stall in the visiting clubhouse at Citi Field, a familiar blue blazer was draped on a hanger. Underneath it sat an equally familiar pair of white shoes.

The ensemble is one that Harry Kalas made famous, and the Phillies are now using them to honor the legendary broadcaster, giving the "uniform" its own stall in visiting clubhouses, and displaying it in the dugout during each home game.

"As [Phillies president] David Montgomery said, if this was a player or a coach, the guys would want to hang his jersey up," said Frank Coppenbarger, the Phillies' director of team travel and clubhouse services, who is in charge of transporting the items on the road. "So that's Harry's jersey. That's his uniform. I think that's a good way of putting it. That's how people remember him."

According to Coppenbarger, the story goes like this:

A group of players, spearheaded by centerfielder Shane Victorino, approached him about obtaining the blazer and shoes, Kalas' trademark throughout his 39 years as a Phillies broadcaster. Coppenbarger contacted Kalas' family, who agreed to provide them. The homemade memorial started in the wake of Kalas' death due to heart disease last month and will continue for the rest of the season. Coppenbarger arranged for a hook to be drilled into the wall of the Phillies dugout at Citizens Bank Park. During home games, the blazer and the shoes greet players as they approach the bat rack. When Coppenbarger can find a convenient place to hang the blazer on the road, he does so. When he can't, like last night at Citi Field, they remain in the locker.

Manager Charlie Manuel said he appreciates the gesture.

"I think it's a way of showing our appreciation and our respect for Harry," he said.

Consider it a retired jersey. *

I'm unstickying this thread (if I can figure out how). Vox is going to leave the tribute in the site banner, though.

Are they inducting someone else as well? Or just ignoring the ballot?

Doesn't sound like they're inducting anyone else, and I think Harry and his family deserve having the night to themselves....

Kalas estate on the market

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/the-insider/Kalas_estate_on_the_market_.html

The Christine Clark Real Estate Team of Long & Foster is selling the house of the late Harry Kalas, which sits in a cul-de-sac bordering Ridley Creek State Park in Upper Providence Township, Delaware County.

Asking price is $625,000.

"It's not anything too pretentious," Clark told me. Though the furnishings will be taken, a bit of Harry the K will remain: The bar in the basement, known as the Kalas Korner, contains stained glass with baseball etchings.

Description has it has two floors of living space, including two full kitchens. The lower floor offers level entries and separate living quarters, ideal for adult children, a nanny/au-pair, caregiver or extended family members.

Eileen Kalas, his widow, plans to leave the area.

I went to a random property and into the map viewer, then I scanned cul-de-sacs next to the park that had the prefix for Upper Prov (35). Found it on the 2nd try. But an even easier way is to search by name, and it is still under Kalas, Harry.

Also I'm sure his house increased in value more than 34% or whatever that is over the last 22 years.

Since Russell Branyan is getting some exposure thanks to a fine season, I'm always hearing in my head Harry's voice during a game in Washington, "How about that Russ Branyan?"

Can't fake that kind of enthusiasm.

Bridge Over Troubled Water playing and the players, coaches, etc. carrying the casket down the line is still possibly the saddest thing I've ever seen.

We still miss ya, HK. Just thinking what another rain delay with Harry would be right now.

Discussion from the House floor

Joe Sestak, the guy running against Specter, was the lead sponsor. Looks like most area congressmen were cosponsors, among others from across the country including Connie Mack.
