73 is too young for anyone to go, but if you have to go, i take so much solace to this day in the fact that he died doing what he loved, in the broadcast booth, at the beginning of the season immediately after the team which he covered for 84838383 years won the world series, which he got to call for the first time. love him :h:

what bothers me now though is that there's a whole generation of phillies fans, and even probably phillies players, who have no idea what that "high hopes" and "outta here" is for that they play at the stadium. like do hoskins and harper and nola even fully appreciate it? the faces of the franchise.

Don’t know what exactly made me think of this tonight, but fast forward to 1:05 and drink, drink, drink that call in. From April 13, 1983.

Wow. I didn't realize the Diaz was such a thoughtful player. But then again maybe it's just the interview technique that brings that out instead of our current post-game interviewer's style of "tell me how big a hit that was".

Bucky doesn't think Hispanic players can be thoughtful.

Harry Kalas, RIchie Ashburn, Merrill Reese and Gene Hart are as important as any single player in why I am a Philadelphia sports fan.

All of Murphy's post game questions are pretty much just long statements then asking a random question at the end pretty much to have the player confirm what he already said. This Harry interview is a lot more open ended.

I remember that game very well. I spent that month sleeping on the couch because we had a german exchange student who was using my bed. My mom kept coming out and telling me to turn the game off, but I had my headphones on and kept turning it back on. I went apeshit on the couch in complete silence and then stayed up even later to listen to the highlights. I didn't remember the interview, but Harry was the best.

And it's true about the lack of open ended questions in today's interviews. I don't know if that's on purpose to control the amount of time, but it definitely affects the quality of the interview and the engagement of the person being interviewed.

Wow. That was nice to hear. I was still living in Phila. at the time, I probably heard the call though I don't specifically remember it. I do remember that season of course since it was special.

I grew up with By Saam and Richie Ashburn then Harry and Richie. Bill Campbell was part of several teams, I think he was before Merle - I can't remember who was with Merle in the earliest years because Stan Walters was still playing in the 70's. I think Merle started in '76-ish.

Gene Hart of course I knew so well, as I was rabid flyers fan too in those years up to during and after the big cup wins. I spent a LOT of time listening to games of all 4 Phila teams on radio along with TV, which was pre-cable til I had Prism when I moved to center city at age 22-ish.

I was long gone from living in the region by time Comcase Sports was a thing...

Richie was my favorite.

Whose Merle?
