There's a guy I've known for years in SF, Stefano. He's kind of an SF version of a Phila. type. Italiam. Shmoozer. Knows everyone. Never pays for a meal anywhere. And a sports and celebrity guy. Somehow, he became friends-ish w Harry the K. Whenever Harry would be in town for Phils/Giants, Stefano would sync up, hang out, drink - get autographs. He got me a signed ball for my dad one time. We were always trying to coordinate a meet. Sometimes Schmidt or others would be there. I regretted not being more proactive on that connection.

I miss Whitey as much.

PTK. We're kinda lucky being old. Got to listen to most of Whitey's career and Was a listener when Harry started. (Listener because in the olden days a lot of games weren't televised). As a bonus, I also remember By Saam, who was way kewl and fun to imitate and Bill Campbell who was pretty boss as well.

I was certainly spoiled. In addition to the great Philly crew, I lived in Missouri, Jack Buck, and of course Seattle. Dave Niehaus was a classic -- "MY, OH MYYYYYYY!!!" -- plus the crew they have now is pretty awesome.

So blessed.

I'm sure I've talked before about how odd it was going to the game in DC that day, sorta nodding at people wearing Phillies stuff, asking if they had heard, etc. Weird, sad day.

I've been trying to watch games with the fresh new crop of players we have in, and they've mostly been close (if low scoring) so they should hold my interest, but the booth just blows. I love Scott and LA so much, but man the TV people are turrible. It really hampers the entire experience as a fan, especially since the team isn't anything special. Miss Harry so much.

I've had the other team's broadcast for every game so far. Enberg is great. Met guys are good. Cincy guys were tolerable. I don't pay close attention to them anyway so our home team announcer guys don't bother me all that much anyway.

Yeah, I went with the Mets guys for that series. Always like them. It's just a shame that given the choice one actively avoids the home team announcers.

It's so true Smitty. By Saam - smooth classic radio voice. Bill Campbell another classic voice for the ages -- did Phils, Eagles and Sixers at one time or another. Another great great Philly voice, wasn't he the voice on Wilt's 100 point game? Maybe I'm confused -- Whitey fit with all of them. He was the ex player younger guy to By and Bill - then when Harry took over I think at first for Bill - it was Musser (who I NEVER liked his voice or personality nothing personal against him) that replaced By Saam when he retired. It's true, not as many games on TV back then.

I had cousins in NYC so I got to occasionally hear some guys up there - and on occasion as is still the case - on a clear night you could get some way far broadcast from some other part of the country -- I new the national guys or guys who did some TV or whatever so I knew Mel Allens voice - Vin Scully and his mentor Red -- I remember Curt Gowdy for Sat game of the week Tony Kubek, Al Michael's before he did MNF did MNBaseball if I recall? I never liked his voice - still don't. Though his personality has more or less grown on me. There was a generation of guys now old - but coming up in the 70's like Brent Musberger who I despised. It's hard to convey to people now since he's older and so different what he was like when he hosted CBS NFL and did Basketball - he once went off about young Magic Johnson screaming "Magic Man Magic Man..." it was a nightmare. I was a huge fan of the original pairing of Summeral and Brookshire. Before Madden replaced Brooky. But that wasn't local. I remember when Merle started in 76 ish i think it was Bill Campbell before him? Can look it up -- maybe you or some other old headz remember? I can remember racing to the car to get the radio on on the way home from Sunday school so as not to miss any Eagles - and of course they were so bad, that not a lot of sell-outs and I had to listen to a lot of Eagle games on radio back then. Gene Hart of course WAS the Flyers. We were lucky in Phila. Out here in Bay Area they had a good guy named Lon Simmons did a lot of stuff out here. The Giants now have Krukow, Duane Kiper, Jon Miller, Dave Flemming and are considered one of the best groups in MLB. Jon Miller has that old timey voice and style but he's moved around a lot. Did Orioles I think for a while. Kruke and Kipe as they call em - have a thing - and as ex players but from way back - they are ok.

That vintage period though when the Phils got really good - started to creep there way there with Lefty, then Bowa and Schmidt and from 76-83 Whitey and Harry were the thing -- they just were something -- a gift to Philadelphians. Whitey died way too young. Miss both of them and enjoy every time I get to see some old clip or hear some audio.

NFL has taken over, but those sleepy long radio games -- I had a mono-transistor radio and would stay up all night to catch the Phils playing in LA or SF or SD - games ending at 1am or later in Phila. - me just a pee-wee. Nate Colbert, Tito Fuentes, Don Sutton -- yeah -- think of all the parking lot booth guys that spent all summer with Harry and Whitey --

the 8th anniversary of his passing is coming to close here in a half hour and i didn't want it to pass without a mention. so many iconic calls, but i figured we'd listen to him sing high hopes after the series win. not the best video but enjoy it anyway.

Just bumping after listening to some of his calls. Will be 10 years next week. God I miss him.

Yeah, the home run thread is nice, but also a reminder of what we we're missing. Glad veteran members of the crew don't have to be in Washington on the anniversary, but I'd imagine there'll be some moments.

Harry and Whitey were about as good as it gets. Their reputation only grows when they're compared with what has replaced them.
