It never happens if the other driver stays in the bloody car. In F1 if a driver did what Ward did (without the being hit bit) he'd get banned from F1 for life. It's astounding how lax the rules are to allow a driver to go on track whilst cars are still circling at speed.

that is fucking horrendous to watch. why is that dude out on foot like that, regardless of how upset he is. really unfortunate. I'm not familiar with stewarts move right there, accelerating, but it does seem like he could be trying to swerve out of the way. Ward narrowly avoids the first blue car and Stewart comes up on him almost immediately after that. just really dumb that it happened

and while the quote about business as usual is disgusting, i understand the context. that's 100% coming from tony's legal team, unfortunately.

I guess we might never truly know if it was intentional or not. The kid was being completely insane but I really don't see any way Stewart would ever do that intentionally. Of course you wouldn't think anyone would do anything to anyone like that. That was awful. Shouldn't have watched it. The only reason I did watch it was because every description I read of the incident made it sound like an impossible collision.

And yeah, that business as usual comment by one of Stewart's guys was

Amazing that with as much money as Stewart is worth and as skilled as he is keeps racing these small tracks and not only injuring himself but crippling and now killing other people. I know he is probably just one of those guys that would do it everyday since he loves it so much but that is sort of insanity in itself.

I think it is very likely it was an accident purely. Just the way ward nearly gets hit by the car before Stewart makes me lean that way.

Wow, just saw this story and video. Stewart isn't racing today btw

These cars that were being driven aren't like your usual NASCAR vehicles. These ones have minimal to no braking, so they slide all over the place when they turn, and if this kid got too close, Tony wouldn't have been able to avoid him. The lighting on the track is also shitty, but I don't think it was a factor. Stewart is a total hothead and flips from nice to asshole in seconds, but I find it hard to believe that he would intentionally run over a 20-year old

it's tough to react when you have millions of internet people pointing the finger at you and calling you a murderer.

The thing is also that those cars are not easy to stop at all and if Stewart did somehow manage to stop it would have been a miracle and probably would have caused another wreck and maybe even both of them in the same place now. I've seen them things flip from just trying to stop on a dime.

I know very little about sprint car racing or the protocol for getting out of one's car after a wreck, so I'll refrain from calling anyone a murderer or from saying it was the victim's fault. I'll just say that a very tragic and sad thing happened and I feel bad for the victim's family.
