Serious question: Does NASCAR want drivers named Dario and Jacques, or would they rather keep their all-american image?

I don't know much about Nascar, but in some ways being a fan seems like being a baseball fan. To the casual observer, it's just a bunch of guys driving in a circle. But to a dedicated fan, there's a ton of strategy and stuff. It's also like pro wrestling, with the drama and soap operatic quality.

I'm not sure about Jacques, but along with Dario comes Ashley Judd. If they really wanted to keep an all American image, I don't think Toyota would be racing.

I think Nascar is interested in international appeal and the dollars that go with it. I think the days of the dominant rural, white male demographic are well in the past.

I had a negative opinion of Nascar until I actually made an effort to watch a race or two. I'd consider myself a die-hard fan now and plan on attending a race this year. I think Nascar has extremely broad appeal and is only going to continue to grow. For a casual fan, it can be as simple as just watching the cars go around the track. It can also be much more complex (pit strategies, points, etc...).

My Nascar loving relative is always telling me that if I ever went to a race, I'd understand. Do any of you guys love it in spite of never seeing it live?

I haven't seen it live yet and am a big fan. I've heard the same thing though.

I've also heard that seeing a race live is a different experience than you might think. I've always thought it would involve a largely drunken crowd with frequent brawls between rival fans. From everything I've heard it is just the opposite, fairly civil.

I have been to two races at Dover and both were awesome. They even let you bring your own beer inside! I can't get into watching on TV though.

I usually watch the first couple laps and the last couple laps. I can't sit through a whole race.

Jimmie Johnson wins the pole for the Daytona 500. Waltrip joins him on the front row...

Another baseball similarity--Mrs. Vulture loves going to baseball games, but won't watch on TV. (Curiously enough, she'll never go to another NFL game, having been to one.)

I went to the Daytona 500 a few years back having never been to a race before and having not been able to watch more than a lap or two on TV. To my surprise, it really was a lot of fun...for a while. And there was a lot of great things to watch that weren't on the track.

But I still can't watch it on TV and don't follow it. It's definitely (for me) one of those "have to be there to enjoy it" kind of things. But I don't think I'll hurry to go back and see another one. It was fun, but I could've lived with it being about a couple hundred shorter.
When I post, I usually post breaking news, the inside scoop, that kindof stuff. I do express my opinion when needed. But usually the news. I want to be respected on this board for my quickness and accuracy of news. That's all I'm asking.

Tony Stewart was half a lap away from winning his first Daytona 500 but was passed by Penske teammates. Ryan Newman wins it (first win anywhere in 2 years), Kurt Busch 2nd. Jeff Burton led with 3 laps left and finished 13th. Dale Jr. finished 9th. Jeff Gordon finished 39th and Jimmie Johnson finished 27th. Dario Franchitti finished 33rd and Sam Hornish Jr finished 15th...

Going to my first race this weekend. Pocono 500!
"I tell all kids not to use that word. If they're 29 and they win the World Series, I think they can say that.
But I definitely would say to all the kids out there, 'Kids, it's a bad word. Don't say it. And I'm dead serious.' "
