If they weren't total assholes, the owners would simply agree to halving the season in every respect. 81 games, players get half their pay, etc. And "regular" employees (i.e., non-player, non-coach, non-front office on the baseball side personnel) would be restored to regular pay if they lost it. The people making modest, normal money.

Odd number is a great touch.

So they are what? 13 games and 25% prorata apart, basically.

Just amazing, yet predictable, that the MLB owners would risk their brand over what is peanuts in the grand scheme of things.

I wonder what starting pitchers think of trying to cram all these games in. You're either going to have a very short re-training period, hardly any off days or maybe both those conditions. I haven't read anywhere that owners would consider backing the playoffs into November -- especially unlikely now that fans in stands is in play. So all these games will be mid-July thru late Sept. and then a bunch of teams in playoffs right after...risky time for SPs.

I think it was the Cardinals owner who went on the radio yesterday saying "this isn't as profitable as the union and fans think it is" - so if you're fucking rich enough to own one of these barely-profitable teams, you're fucking rich enough to take a hit to make this thing work for a half-year. Idiots.

It was him. He also bought a giant mansion in California last month, so I am struggling to see how it isn't that profitable.

He bought the team in 95 for 150 million. It’s projected at being valued at 2.2 billion now.

And yet, they refuse to open their books
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

yes, this businessman is keeping a non-profitable business instead of selling it for $2.2b.

I know this is very simplistic but I don't understand why everyone (in all types of endeavors) can't realize this is a one time deal and adjust accordingly without getting hung up on ruining the past or setting precedents.

I just think any group (management, employees, customers) not willing to acknowledge the unique reality deserve what they get as a result.

Peanuts have been an integral part of the game since at least the 1908 writing of Take Me Out to the Ballgame.

which reminds, after their brief flurry of musical fame, both of these guys ended up as professors at Johns Hopkins University:

Stark:
I wrote a column a week and a half ago that flowed from a similar place in my soul. That headline read: “Memo to baseball — don’t drive off this cliff!” I heard from so many people in the sport after I wrote that column that I lost count. But one of them was a man named Jim Kaat, who has been playing or working in baseball for more than 60 years.
Here were his words of wisdom. I’ve repeated them about a thousand times since:
“Sometimes – actually most times – BEING RIGHT is not as important as DOING WHAT’S RIGHT.”

Feel like tons of players would say not deferring to owners whose valuations have exploded by based on TV deals is "DOING WHAT'S RIGHT"? Great platitude but uncertain how it applies to the current situation...
