I dont side with the owners but I think the MLBPA is spending a lot of time trying to win a PR battle that they aren't likely to win. Fans blame the players pretty much always.

Isn't a strike possible at the beginning of next season?

Yep. Combination of "you're still making 1% money" with "I have no control over my job/pay, why should you have control over yours"

Baseball's problem is that they are uniquely positioned for failure. They already had a massive labor relations issue that was probably going to lead to a work stoppage the next time around anyway, and now they have to essentially re-write the CBA within a few weeks when each side distrusts the other and nobody wants to give an inch that might be used against them later.

I think the players position is that it might be worth just throwing in the towel on the season rather than accept such a comically low piece of the pie and then have that be used later against you when it comes to the big CBA negotiation. If the owners perspective is "we can't make money playing baseball," I don't know how you respond to that.

I don't know if either side has a particularly good PR strategy in this, but ultimately, I don't think there is a good PR strategy because I think no matter what, both sides are going to take the brunt of it. The players probably take the bigger hit in terms of individual Q rating, but the bigger issue is that if people don't like baseball players, they don't watch baseball games and buy baseball tickets and merchandise, which ultimately hurts the owners as well.

Maybe I'm oversimplifying but it seems to me that the entire breakdown here is that back when the deal between the owners and the MLBPA was cut in March, the ownership side lacked the imagination to consider the possibility that there could be games but without a significant source of revenue that is normally associated with such games (fans in attendance).

It seems to be that language does exist in that March agreement to renegotiate if fans cannot attend. The union claimed otherwise but it sounds like they're posturing (per Rosenthal in The Athletic today).

Yeah the language is kinda there, neither side or their lawyers were prescient enough to really make it explicit. It's likely had either side pressed the issue at the time, the March agreement would never have happened. Or maybe the current standoff would have happened a couple months ago, not that it would have helped.

Yeah I've been trying to find the language, no luck, but my recollection was it was just mentioned as sort of an assumption of the contract, it didn't terminate the deal or give the owners the explicit right to renegotiate. Perfect recipe for a dispute.

Both sides say they have evidence supporting their positions https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/05/ ... spute.html
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

I think both sides have to accept that they are both going to lose a ton of money, especially the owners.

By the way they may be competing with the NBA the next 2 summers

I just listen to Passan now. He thinks there will be baseball.

50 games would be insane though. I wish they could just meet in the middle.

50 games would change the dynamic of must win though.

Also forgot that Washington started 19-31 last year before winning the WS. Phils usually start hot. Hoping that's a plus here.

And maybe not even just the next two summers. There's at least the possibility that the new schedule could become permanent going forward.

Absolutely. Try to get a deal based on no fans, then a month or so later some places allow fans to attend. You think the owners would share that extra revenue with the players? No chance!
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."
