Yeah Girardi will pretty clearly have a direct line to Middleton. Not an ideal dynamic but what are you gonna do. Get better players and it doesnt matter.

Yeah, the best news is we didn't hire Baker or Showalter, both of whom would have been bad, I think.

Pitching coach is now a key hire.

Two names to watch for Phillies pitching coach. Dave Eiland and Larry Rothschild. Both were former Girardi pitching coaches with NYY. Rothschild has year left on NYY deal, but NYY could make changes on staff.

I mean I think it’s a little nuts that managers aren’t allowed to MANAGE the team by, among other things, making up lineup cards. The GM’s job, and his analytics department’s job, is to assemble the best roster possible. The manager’s job is to manage the players given him, period.

Very happy with this. Girardi's who I wanted before Kapler was even officially gone. Was never a "Fire Gabe at all costs" guy, but the availability of Maddon and Girardi was the biggest reason to make the move IMO and I preferred Girardi of those two.

Another interesting note from Matt Breen: Jim Thome could be in play as the hitting coach, provided he wants to move into coaching and out of his front-office role with the White Sox, which allows him to spend more time with his family.

In recent days #Phillies interest had centered on Girardi over Baker/Showalter. But he still took 2d #Mets interview on Tuesday. Will never say now if he wanted that job more. Also he wanted #Yankees job more in ‘07 and kept negotiating with #Dodgers as leverage

Yeah, man. Why *wouldn't* you prefer to work for cheap owners like the Wilpons and a micromanaging GM like BVW who won't let you fill out a lineup card for the team that will always be second fiddle in NYC?

There will be a lot of discussion about who actually hired Joe Girardi to manage the Phillies. FWIW, source says Matt Klentak told baseball operations folk that Girardi was his first choice. GM wasn’t on board with firing Kapler, but sounds like he’s in on Girardi.

2 big offensive pieces: McCutchen and Rendon

3 new starters: Houston and Washington are in the WS with 2 stud SPs and a 3rd good SP they are only counting on for 4-5 IP at a time. Sign one stud SP (G Cole ideally, obviously) and the SP situation might be OK if Arrieta is healthy as the #3.

Bullpen is an issue, but there's enough luck in bullpen performance year in and year out I would definitely not seek to solve it in free agency.

Sign Cole and Rendon and 2020 is a very fun season. Unfortunately the likelihood of signing either, let alone both is slim. It would require a willingness to blow the cap, which perhaps Middleton is willing to do but we haven't seen yet from the Phils. It would also require a willingness for a stud FA SP to choose Philly...which outside of Lee hasn't happened except through extension (and CHoP probably had a ton of influence on Lee's decision).

Hope Girardi is a good recruiter.
