2019-20 Phillies Offseason: Striving for Better Than Average

I sure hope the Phillies don’t. It would be embarrassing to cheat and still be so mediocre.

I really hope we weren't cheating from 2012 - 2018.

@JeffPassan
The seven players who will reject qualifying offers, sources tell ESPN, and have draft-pick and perhaps international-bonus compensation tied to their free agency: Gerrit Cole, Anthony Rendon, Stephen Strasburg, Zack Wheeler, Madison Bumgarner, Josh Donaldson and Marcell Ozuna.

Not that we didn't already know it, but the Phillies are probably losing some draft picks given those names despite what Klentak said.

Sign 'em all. Who cares about losing your 8th round pick.

Trade Bohm, Segura, Howard and ? for Lindor.

Salisbury says the Phillies could sign JT to a 1 year contract this winter to maintain flexibility for the 2020 payroll then sign him to an extention later this winter or even in the spring that would kick in for the 2021 season when Arrieta and Robertson are off the books.

I think that’s the smart play from an accounting perspective provided that Realmuto is cool with it.

That's probably a big assumption, for a catcher in his prime.

If the new contract comes during the same winter, there's really no risk to him.

I'd LOVE a 1-year deal with JT.

Seems like circumvention or the CBA. Sounds good if it’s allowed.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

Realistically Zack Wheeler, and Marcell Ozuna seem most likely Phillies moves. Bidding on Gerrit Cole is a must, but is it realistic to get excite? The others get gobbled up elsewhere I think.

Under the old CBA, a long-term deal for future seasons signed at any point before a year began got lumped all together with the current year and spread evenly (happened with the Howard extension). That's not the case any more, so it doesn't really matter when Realmuto signs long-term as long as his 2020 deal has been determined first.

I don't think Ozuna is a fit anywhere defensively.

LF and CF...shouldn't play every day, but would be good to switch in and out with Cutch and Haseley, and as injury insurance. He's adequate in CF and decent in LF.

Doubt they’re going going to pay $100M and lose a pick for a guy not to play everyday.

If you are saying he's not going to be worth the contract and the pick I'd agree 100%. But not because there is no place for him to play. His OPS+ is only around 105 for the last two seasons. He sort of projects to be average, and he's going to get way too much to be average.

I only meant that defensively he could play both LF and CF and share the positions with Cutch and Haseley. Offensively I don't think he'll be good enough for his contract.

Ozuna is not adequate in CF and hasn't played there since 2016 (30 pounds ago too).

I would get Wheeler, Hamels and another starter (Gibson/Miley/Porcello type) for the rotation. Give 2-year deals to Moustakas and Gardner. Sign a bunch of one-year bullpen guys. I don't think Bohm can be counted on as an everyday 3B for a team trying to make the playoffs. If he's absolutely tearing the cover off the ball they can always get creative with Moose at 2B a game or two a week plus some 1B to spell Hoskins.

Is there any thought of re-signing CDick who would not be crazy expensive and have him or Cutch play CF?

I think they value defense too much to consider any of the "passable in CF" bats.
