Now that you mention it, I do see the comp. Swing is kinda similar. If he can hit like Eisenreich did...!

12 more RBIs
11 more BBs (and Ks)
went from 3 triples to 13
went from 5 HRs to 11
went from 6 SBs to 15
AVG down 18 points and OBP down a point, but SLG up 56 points

at the end of the day... even for a 21 year old his slash isn't sexy, and especially for a 1.1.

best way to describe his development this year.... he raised his floor but did nothing to raise the ceiling.

Van Slyke walked 46 times and whiffed 64 in his first season, age 22, 101 games / 364 PA. 12.6% walk rate, 17.5% whiff rate.
Haseley walked 14 times and whiffed 60 in his first season, age 23, 67 games / 242 PA. 5.8% walk rate, 24.8% whiff rate.

Strike zone control doesn't seem to be a skill he possesses.

I like Haseley a lot - I think if he's the platoon solution against RHP, gaining much of his value with his glove, and isn't one of your 4 best hitters, you've got a really solid lineup. Not so hard to find solutions for the vs LHP part of a platoon, either.

with the comp, looking a bit down the line with something that should look like van slyke's 162 game average.

He did. He'll have to make further strides to be a mlb player, but he moved up a level and got better at just about everything (power, stolen bases, batting eye and he's still 21. A ways to go, but he put himself back on the map as a possibility. Just not a sure thing.

Not sure what azrider is getting at with the Randolph comp that he then contradicts in his second paragraph. Moniak had a better year than Randolph at Reading at a year younger and has a lot more tools. Randolph will have to improve significantly just to continue his career. Moniak would have to regress quite a bit to find himself in the same boat.

lazy comp, but randolph got a pass because of age for levels and some short term extended periods of success, only not to ultimately capitalize on it.

Making it about the specific prospect is unfair to those kids imo. Individually it’s fine that Haseley will probably be an average hitter and Moniak may be MLB level but on a macro level the system should be producing more studs and it’s not.

Back to the original question. For me part of it is that I wouldn't count Cole as a 7 win player in 2020 and part of it is substituting position player WAR for pitcher WAR equally.

gerrit cole right now is equal to or better than max scherzer was when he signed with the nats. [just using the handy b-r multi-season averaging tool, cole is younger than scherzer was and has averages over the previous 5 years that put him ahead in k, bb, and hr rates, better era+, fip, whip, and ra/9, and the same bwar]. since joining the nats, scherzer has averaged 6.5 fwar and 7.0 bwar per season.
other than scherzer, i'm having trouble coming up with another pitcher this young and good to hit the fa market since greg maddux (obviously much better... greatest pitching fa signing ever?). this is truly a rare opportunity.

i usually prefer spending on hitters instead of pitchers, but this offseason it is a lot more clear than last offseason that the rotation is a place where the phillies need to improve, and it's hard to ignore the success rates of teams with at least two really good (ace or legit #1s) starting pitchers. thankfully, the availability of rendon to address their other big need and the presence of enough fa pitchers in the tier behind cole combine to provide the phils with a decent backup plan. however, to me, cole is such a uniquely good, young pitching fa that he's too good not pursue all-out.

From an interview I reference in a thread, probably the minors thread, one of the announce for Reading declared that MM has nothing left to prove n AA. His disposition is that he performed at an age below league average, and he should start in AAA next year. As someone who saw him often (the announcer), I will give respect to his assessment over a season.

Regarding pitching targets... not sure I love taking fly-ball pitchers in parks that suppress homers, and moving them to CBP. That's both Wheeler and, particularly, Odorizzi.

They both give up flyballs, but had a really low HR/FB rate, in part because of parks. Wheeler less risky than Odorizzi on that front, but he stinks like Mets, anyway.

Want Cole for sure. If, in addition, we're shopping in the might-be-less-than-full-price bin, I'll take Wacha and Alex Wood, presuming competent doctors tell me they're healthy.

Looks like we are going to hire Brian Barber for amateur scouting director according to Jim. Barber is the national cross-checker for the Yankees.

Yankees are good so I'm into it.

Kinda like a supervisor scout. Basically giving second opinions/signing off on scouts reports on prospects
