No. Signing Cole would still only give us the 3rd best rotation in the NL East, just ahead of the Braves (who have a superior offense). Need to sign Cole + a #3 starter just to stay competitive.
I hate signatures, but I love irony.

Because they've done a bad job developing talent internally.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

I thought "devastating turn of events" was the Victorino shot that tied it at 5

Yeah, unless we move the city. I guess that depends on how committed we are to winning.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale spoke to a couple of Cole's fellow Astros, and they told him they think Cole will end up playing in California. The South Side, at least in the Astros' clubhouse, it seems, is not a betting favorite.

"It will be west of Nevada," outfielder Josh Reddick said. "We know he wants to be a West Coast guy. He’s a California guy, so he probably wants to be close to home. I know he mentioned Oakland a couple of times because of how he’s pitched there in the past. ... But that probably won’t happen. They’d have to clear the whole roster to afford him."

"I got the Angels," pitcher Wade Miley said, "and paying him at least $250 million."

Yeah, like Harper was a West Coast guy and Corbin was a lifelong Yankees fan and Machado wanted to play with his brother-in-law, etc, etc, etc.... This is all just the media looking for something to talk about. Cole will follow the money like every other FA before him.

Sure. One that involves signing Anthony Rendon and making a trade for a SP to slot in as the #2 behind Nola (in addition to signing another FA SP like Hamels or someone else).

I really hope they don't focus on Rendon. The offense was definitely below what you'd like but the starting pitching was almost the worst in the NL. Absolutely need to focus there even if you can't get Cole

There's a lot of good pitching available

aces:
Hyun-Jin Ryu
Gerrit Cole
Stephen Strasburg (if he opts out)

other:
Yu Darvish (if he opts out)
Rich Hill
Dallas Keuchel
Cole Hamels
Madison Bumgarner
Zack Wheeler
Gio Gonzalez
Jake Odorizzi
Michael Pineda

If the goal is to get into the playoffs, sign 2 of those guys and it should push them to 89 wins or more on paper. Then sign someone to replace Franco.

You could do both if you sign Rendon though.

There's a case to be made for Rendon being a top-5 player in MLB and making him your 3B gives you some potential surplus in the form of Hoskins, Bohm, or some non-Harper OFs to try to go and get a pretty decent pitcher via trade, in addition to the non-Gerrit Cole arms that are available in FA.

Get me Rendon and Strasburg... really hurts the Nats and Strasburg would be cheaper than Cole

Feel like Zack Wheeler could be a high reward get on the relative cheap.

Was planning on digging into his stats later. Think I’ll agree but I don’t think he’ll be cheap.

If the goal is sustained success, as I believe Klentak has mentioned, we're not gonna do that by throwing top $$$ at every FA. We have to build from within, and then supplement w FA to fill in the holes.

Unfortunately, we have too many holes, because someone doesn't know how to build depth, so the only choice we have to win now is to...throw top $$$ at every FA.

Sigh
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."
