Pirates fired Hurdle, and as mentioned a few other places, the Cubs and Maddon are parting ways

Up to 5 managerial openings, with Kapler and Callaway TBD

**************

Verlander reached 3000 career Ks last night while also joining Gerrit Cole with 300+ for the season

I am glad you are so confident. 7-13 or worse seems entirely doable.

Passan:

Brad Ausmus' firing by the Los Angeles Angels, as @Buster_ESPN first reported, clears the way for Joe Maddon to return to the Angels, the team for whom he worked for 30 years. While it's not a fait accompli, a number of sources believe Maddon to the Angels is likely to happen.

We were discussing the Mitch Williams 4:43am game at work and it brought me back to my best day of baseball ever. July 24th, 1998, Phillies DH where they won both game in extras. Most notably is the second game where they came back 4 times in 4 consecutive innings. I decided to look that game up on fangraphs and I can't imaging a more volatile WPA game than this. Anyone know of a way to figure out that kind of thing?

On this day in baseball, Jose Feliciano sang the National Anthem before the fifth (!) game of the World Series in Detroit. Hard to believe listening to it today, but even without twitter many people had no problem letting it be known that they didn't like this.

Good account of the game, and the anthem, from SABR

@JonHeyman
Sources: Joe Maddon interviews with the #LAAngels today. Word is, he’s their top choice, and they are his top choice. Things look lined up for a Maddon/Angels marriage.

I guess there are limits as to how much someone can like Hazleton lol

Living and coaching baseball in southern California, watching Mike Trout play every day, another team in the same town that gets the majority of the media scrutiny... sounds like a dream job to me.

And he gets to return to a team he worked for for almost half his life.
