Mantle has to be somewhere soon. Bonds steroids or not, Clemens, steroids or not, Mays, Williams, Ruth, Gehrig, Wanger, Paige, A-rod, Aaron, Nap Lajoie, Musial, Jeter, Bob and Josh Gibson...I'm missing a few.

A-rod > Jeter (79)? More importantly A-Rod > Michael Jack Schmidt? I think A-Rod must be outside the hot 100 mostly because I do not see him in the top 20.

ARod is clearly better than Jeter.

ARod and Schmidt are close, but Rodriguez played 380 more games (about 16% more than Schmidt), and thus accumulated large leads in just about every category - ~500 more each of runs and RBI, about 900 hits, 140 doubles, 150 homers, 150 SB (with fewer CS).

Schmidt's best season, and the best either of them ever had, was cut short by the strike, which hurts. If both their careers had started at age 24, Schmidt would be the clear choice, I think, but pre-24, Schmidt had a .690 OPS in 400 AB, and ARod had .914 OPS in 2500 AB.

Figure top 17 will include Bonds, Ruth, Aaron, Teddy Ballgame, Mays, Cobb, Wagner, Musial, Hornsby, Gehrig, Mantle, Pujols, Paige, Big Train, Gibson, Clemens, and maybe Kershaw or Big Unit?

Ah, thanks. Kershaw's ERA+ is... crazy good. 2nd all-time, I think.

If the author wants to start a fire he can put Bonds at #1.

alleged steroids: most dangerous hitter of all time.

i don't think i've seen anyone turn on a ball faster than him and probably won't ever again.

I appreciate that the Rogers Hornsby article today was pretty much just stories of him being an asshole.

The twist in the Speaker write up was his redemption from being a deplorable racist with a fondness for the memory or the Confederacy to loving to work with Larry Doby was endearing.

I guess the twist of that then is he only used steroids for the latter part of his career. So while he was always one of the best (if not, the best) of his era, he wasn't feared on anywhere near the same level pre-roids

There was no 19 because of the tie at 20. Speaker was 18 and Hornsby was 17. A-Rod is today's at 16.

You thought he should be outside the top 20 or closer to 1? His stats we're insane.

With the delay Posnanski is switching to 3 articles per week for the top 13, not sure how that works, anyway Gehrig was 14 today.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

He's filling the gaps by writing about favorite but not necessarily good players. Today was Duane Kuiper.
