Going, going, gone ... the Baseball History Thread

Postby thephan » Tue May 14, 2019 15:47:03

I've traded a few baseball history items with a few posters over the years, and always though that there should be a thread for just such information. Today I showed a co-working something that cemented that there is no better time then the present to talk about the past.

I support this thread wholeheartedly but wonder if it shouldn't be on the main board. Plenty of room for both a general baseball (dealing mostly with the current or recent seasons) and a baseball history thread.

The occasional blog post of Ebbets Field Flannels is enjoyable. If you don't know EFF, they make really interesting, and really expensive historic reproductions. This post is about a teenage Babe Ruth squaring off for the Providence Grays against Wally pipps Rochester Hustle. He featured both pitching and hitting, including a very strange "house rule" in Rochester that balls hit out of the park are triples, leaving Ruth to his baserunning to tie the game.

An interesting tidbit I learned while reading "The Betrayal", which is about the Black Sox scandal:

If the A's, Indians, Tigers, Browns, and Senators didn't go along with appointing Landis as commissioner, the White Sox, Red Sox, and Yankees were going to leave the AL and join the NL and form a 12 team league. The 12th team was going to be the first of the remaining AL teams to jump ship or a new team placed in either Cleveland or Detroit. It got so far as the three teams dissolving their relationship with the AL and joining the NL, only to have the other 5 teams acquiesce later that day or the next day.
Yes son. I'm the best mono-thingy guy there ever was.

You might not realize that the first world series featured players from the players from both the Phillies and Athletics in 1902. OK, I am mostly playing with you because this world series, first use of the term, was a football championship. As insane, the millionaires and their toys mindset comes to play because indeed the owners of baseball teams, including the Philadelphia A's and Phillies, started up teams in the NFL version 1. These owners also used their baseball players to fill out the roster! No kidding.

The world series was also landmark because it was played indoors. Seriously, check the link, it was hosted inside of MGS in NYC. The Philadelphia Phillies were in a very short lived league.

Information is pretty scant, but this page, one of few, seems fairly stable.

EDIT: I've been looking for this off and on for a few weeks. All I needed to do was publish a post to find the right source. This is about the history of the league and what went on specifically in Philly.

I listened to this game on the radio. After this game was over was probably when I realized that I cared more about baseball than most people. I wanted to talk about this game and family/friends didn't care. Had to wait until I saw my grandfather(reason I'm a Phillies phan) who actually asked me if I had see/heard this game.

The win probability chart on that page is interesting.

Capital idea for a thread, now I can stop cluttering the random baseball thoughts thread with my musings on this subject.

That's not the first use of the term World Series as the unofficial championship series from 1884-1890 in baseball was called that as well. baseball reference link

Speaking of the World Series (to borrow McCarthy's signature terrible transition) it looks like after a six year period prior to WFC when it looked like we'd have a Wild Card team represented in the World Series all the time (as every season from 2002-2007 did) there's been much less of that. From 2008 to 2018, of the 22 teams who went to the World Series, only three were wild card teams. Two of which played each other in the 2014 series.

The 23-22 game always reminds me of the 1976 game where we fell behind the cubs 13-2, then ended up winning 18-16. Because of this:
