a player has to have the puck to check him. if he doesn’t it’s interference. even if the islander has the puck, voracek prob gets a penalty there for catching him in the head.

The NHLPA has requested an "expedited appeal hearing" on behalf of Philadelphia Flyers forward Jakub Voracek, who was suspended for two games for interference, and that's interesting for several reasons. An appeal for a suspension of this length is very rare, because NHL commissioner Gary Bettman isn't required to hear an appeal for a ban of five games or less. There would have to be a compelling reason for him to do so. The Flyers are asking for a quick turnaround here because they face the Ottawa Senators on Monday night, trailing the final wild card spot by five points. Flyers coach Scott Gordon took issue with the suspension on Monday, claiming that Voracek as trying to protect himself against the Islanders' Johnny Boychuk when the interference occurred. "A guy's sprinting down the boards. Sees Jake, doesn't slow down. Jake's not just going to stand there and absorb the hit," he said.
