We'll see how everything else shakes out because that will determine how I feel about it, but this deal seems too long for that AAV given the donaldson deal. Maybe other deals will be like this this offseason. If so, then it is what it is. Not much to compare it to at this point.

I would recommend you compare Donaldson's injury history to McCutchen's. It's not an apples to apples situation.

I like this move. McCutchen is still a very good player. Plus, he'll be valuable teammate helping the young guys.

So far, our favorite team has improved at LF, 1B and SS. Pretty good.

I don't think they're finished. Feeling good about 2019.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

I'm ok with it but really wish our we'd be able to get a 3 win player from our farm system. Sort of amazing to me that during this decade we haven't produced that from within.

Heard a rumor we're in on Delmon Young.

That's what i was going to say. Donaldson is a year older and coming off two injury shortened seasons. He was almost certainly going to get a one year deal where, hopefully for him, he can show he's healthy and productive and perhaps then sign something longer term. McCutcheon seemingly doesn't have any of those question marks.

It’s also 2 different signings. Signing McCutchen isn’t preventing them from improving at 3rd base

Good choice IMO.

Hopefully there will be an extension signed before then, but 'Cutch's option year is Nola's free agent year. Built in savings plan so we can pay Aaron BIG starting in 2022 when we pay AM $3M to go away.

I know the signing doesn't keep us from upgrading 3B. I'm really hoping we get Machado to do that. I was just comparing their AAV and the fact that we got Mclutch for 3 years. I really like the donaldson signing. Even if he only plays 120 games, he'll be pretty good for those 120 games. Now, to be honest, Mclutch's recent numbers are better than I thought they were, so I like it more now than when I first heard of the deal. And like I said, how I feel about the deal will likely depend on what else we do. If he's a piece of a bigger plan, then that's different than if he's the main hitter FA we get.

If we signed Donaldson he would be hurt the whole year/Braves he will be an MVP candidate

I get it. But there’s no point in comparing anything. If they wanted Donaldson, they would have just signed him too. If mccutchen was two years older and didn’t play much the last two years, he would have had a one year deal too

I think the point of comparing them is that both teams are in the same division and they are the two biggest hitter signings of the offseason so far. One of the teams is my favorite team and the other is the team we lost the division to after leading them going into the last 1/3 of the season. Comparing the two also helps us start to get a feel for this year's market. I also mentioned Donaldson because he was my fav of the non-machado/harper group. Maybe he'll be injured all year and Mclutch will be awesome or maybe the opposite will happen. Stay tuned!

nah, you only mentioned AAV. That doesn’t matter bc they’re two different situations. Let’s see how the rest plays out

I also mentioned the market, but yes, let's see how it plays out.

2019 1b / LF combo of Rhys / mccutchen > 2018 1b / LF combo of Santana / Rhys. And then we traded JP for segura and a loogy. This is all fine so far though admittedly underwhelming

This is where I am. We need to make the one big signing and add something to the starting rotation that's more stable, but we are on pace for where we need to be. My only concern is that we added the easier piece first, though it was never likely that Harper/Machado would sign this early.
