Phillies Sign Andrew McCutchen: 3 yrs/$50 mil

I think you have to add these guys now since you don't know how long it will take Machado and Harper to make decisions and the secondary market, i.e. Cutch, Happ, closer might be dried up plus it shows the two big fish we are serious about contending
Even if you get run over by a clown car and pissed on by a busload of school children, it's still your responsibility to interpret the meaning of the event and choose a response

yeh, it's just hard to know which players to add if you don't know which of the big two you'll get. I guess they can always deal the excess and that's been my preference.

If we still playing with Monopoly money, then I'd go out today and sign Keuchel and Britton... stay in the headlines, make Harper and Machado think about us as much as possible

I think it was the Santana signing last year where everyone said another shoe had to drop, but sometimes it doesn't happen. Hopefully it happens this time.

Mets inquired on Andrew McCutchen before he went to Philly. Weren’t going to be in the 50M ballpark, however.

Yeah if you sign Machado just trade Franco if you sign. Harper trade one of the OFs. No reason it can’t be resolved before camp.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

These are the biggest free agent signings and the month they signed...

Cano $240M Dec 2015
Pujols $240M Dec 2011
Price $217M Dec 2015
Scherzer $210M Jan 2015
Greinke $206M Dec 2015
Heyward $184M Dec 2015
Lester $155M Dec 2014

I don't see Harper or Machado taking much longer. They have plenty of suitors who are willing to give them a ton of money.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, every where you go. What will Santa Middleton bring us?
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

@Ken_Rosenthal
Per source, McCutchen deal with #Phillies is back-loaded: $10M in 2019, $17M in 2020, $20M in 2021, plus $15M club option or $3M buyout for 2022.

So I guess the plan would be to offer Machado something like 40 million year 1.

Hmmm, if they plan to sign machado/harper, why would they backload it when our homegrown guys will need to be signed at that point. I know it's AAV that counts, but I don't get why they would make it that way unless they plan to sign both Machado and Harper for big money with 2 year buyouts or they plan to overpay for a bunch of 2nd tier guys on 2 year contracts. I'm tired, so I'm probably missing something.
