As for him not figuring out immediately it was his wife, if I were in that situation I doubt I would immediately jump to the conclusion it was my wife who had done something so stupid. And, even once I did figure it out I wouldn’t want to go public immediately and blame my wife. In addition to further damaging the marriage it would look awfully unseemly to blame my wife.

edit: lying doesn't hurt his career anymore anyway. he's done as a GM in this league and probably most FO jobs. there's no disadvantage to lie and only positives if he somehow can get away with a coverup.
