Not his point. He's saying what is unquestionably right: That we all bring our human nature to projecting players and, the less information we have, the more we're prone to do so. Who has more information is irrelevant. The question is how much of our own human nature to we bring to decisions like this and that's a very good question to ask. If you're suggesting that each NBA exec is so finely tuned to his own psyche that he carefully considers his own bias and prejudices and accurately factors them into each player protection, all of which are made with a high degree of subjectivity and imperfect information, then you're right, he's got no point.
i agree with your point about human nature. if you think "who has more information is irrelevant," then yeah, this is a pointless discussion. i think hinkie is armed with far more info that anything we've read/seen about exum and will therefore make a much more informed decision than you or i can

Feel like there's a reasonable analogy to be made here about Exum::College Player as Hinkie::More Established GM.
Not to say that he couldn't be Branch Rickey, especially with his few moves so far, but we're working on severely limited data and projecting hope on to him.
td11 wrote:but you said "the less info we have, the more we're prone to do so (bring our human nature to projecting players)." in this case you and i have much less info than hinkie. therefore i assume he will be less prone to do the polly-anna projecting

But your assumption proves the point: We have precious little information about Hinkie's nature and how it affects his decision making, which explains, at least in part, why we have more optimism in Hinkie than, e.g., Amaro. It was a lot easier to have faith in Amaro in the early going before his flaws became more manifest. It's human nature. There's truth behind the saying that familiarity breeds contempt.
