I think it'd make a lot more sense if every state gave a candidate 2 votes for the popular win and then have every congressional district within the state be worth another vote. I'm not a fan of the winner take all thing.

Ideally, first past the post should be eliminated, but that'll never happen because it would threaten to take power from the two parties in charge.

So Democrats can lose PA 50-17?

So the districts that vote for Clinton over Trump end up giving her some votes towards the 270 rather than Trump taking every vote in the state whether it was close or far.

In his first pre-dawn remarks to the faithful when his election was all but certain, drumpf, ever the elliptical truth teller, remarked that "I look very much forward to being your president, and hopefully at the end of two years or three years or four years or maybe even eight years you will say so many of you worked so hard for us, with you."

Admittedly he's as intelligible as a gerbil, but can be read as, "two years is about all the attention span I've got"
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

I see what you are saying, so instead of getting all 20, he gets 13 and she gets 7 or something like that. I think there is a lot of reform to be done with the whole process, the problem is it never gets done. Even Obama said in 2012 there are things he wanted to change with the whole thing, but I don't think they ever got around to it.

he and holder were going to make gerrymandering and district reform a key priority after his time in office. still will i'm sure but the hill just got infinitely steeper.

I had pretty much suspected based on previous conversations that she was a republican, but mostly based on fiscal issues, as she's kind of a hippie in many other ways. I never would have ever guessed she would have actually voted Trump, but lo and behold she did.

She railed on and on about how horrible Obamacare (and Obama in general) is, and went on about how much better off everyone will be and how Trump's "policies" are so great.

When I brought up the racist, hateful, horrible shit he's said and encouraged, she said that she doesn't see that because she doesn't go on social media and that's where this stuff is being perpetuated and doesn't accurately reflect reality. I'm fairly certain she's never really known a minority ever. In hindsight I also remember her making some remarks in the past that would indicate some closet racism, but I had always given her the benefit of the doubt.

At the same time she also admitted that Trump is a vile pig and it was a "tough choice". When I brought up the pussy grabbing and misogyny she wrote it off as locker room talk. This is a woman who I'm sure has had to counsel victims of sexual abuse, just writing that stuff off. All she seemed to focus on was this idea that we're all going to be making more money somehow. She had a rationalization for everything.

I sat there stunned. Don't know if I'm being fair or not, but I pretty much lost all respect I had for her and can't imagine going back. How can she of all people not see how mentally unstable and dangerous this man is? Maybe I'm not really that fucked up in the head after all.

I'm just catching up so sorry if someone already said this already, but she sounds like an awful counselor

I became concerned on election day when I read a post on 538 talking about Colorado turnout and the signs were there that large numbers of people didn't like either candidate and were making their decisions over the last week. All we heard the last week was Hillary's emails. I feel like Comey may have decided the election. I hope history paints him for the weak pawn he is. It was said that he was protecting his image at all cost. Let his legacy be his image as a partisan hack.

A few quick takes. Busy as hell at work today (partially owing to rolling in 90 minutes late), and may rant more later.

-Abolish the electoral college

-My biennial post making fun of House Democrats if they actually re-elect Pelosi as leader. Going over various House districts and it's amazing how not close the Dems came in supposedly hot races. I am not saying this is Pelosi's fault, but the top three in the Democratic Party House leadership are now a combined 230 years old and have lost four straight elections without any shakeup. In some respects I wish my side had this sort of patience given there's a handful itching to oust Ryan even though we won the House, but jesus.

-Been going through the state by state exits in the states that flipped from Obama to Trump, and Trump ran 3-6 points behind Romney with Republicans in each while doing better with Democrats and especially Independents. Clinton ran way behind Obama's numbers with 18-29 year olds - eg in PA Obama won these 63-35, Clinton just 52-43. Though I guess I don't know how much stock to place in exits after how badly they missed the topline results last night.

This almost goes without saying, but they won't learn that from this, though they should (i'm completely with Gimpy on this). Elected Democrats usually stay in line...and there's not much new blood at all. We're screwed. It's up to your party.

i want to post something in here that is sort of related to politics, but personal?

this has been an eye-opening campaign for me, not because it taught me anything i didn't already know about politics or the campaigns, but because the woman and i love and about to marry has been pretty emotionally invested in seeing HRC win and deep down i didn't feel the same, but i voted for HRC because I trusted and believed in the conviction of my absolute favorite person in the world. she is crushed by the results and even more seriously, worried about what it means for woman and for her work, which is by and large, defending women against sexual harassment, gender discrimination and the all around "lockerroom talk" that some people feel excusable. all things i've taken for granted for years and never thought so much about.

our lives are going to be different now. the city is going to be overrun with Trump folks. they'll be at bars, restaurant, in jobs, and neighborhoods that we've come to know to be a certain thing. they may not be those things anymore. it really remains to be seen that i can maintain my still fledgling business here and for the missus, the courts could change in a profound way as to make her work even more thankless than it is now. i've been in this city for 16 years, and she for 10. we've built our lives here, have friends, a church, and most importantly, social capital that allows us to pursue the work and lifestyle (modest at best in a tremendously expensive city) that we're trying to achieve. there is a very real chance that we'll have to move out of the area. if her firm is affected, if budgets for my type of work are affected.

we've been talking very seriously about having kids -- she really wants to have them, to the point that we've been planning on the timing and how to adjust our careers -- and last night, she said doesn't think she wants to anymore. i know that sounds like an overreaction, but i cannot state in any accurate terms just how painful it was to hear that. even the possibility of an election -- and a president -- that would cause us to change the plans we have for our lives, that seems like something a democratic republic should absolutely not have to consider in any wide-ranging terms in this day and age.

some of this is ironic for a white person to complain about. it sounds like the gentrification that took place just as i was moving here. maybe it's another learning experience and an illustration of the need for perspective. white privilege? i don't know. maybe it's time for us to move on, geographically and emotionally. i don't have the answers. i do know that i don't trust anyone who does. those people are called phonies, btw.

i love analyzing messages and communication, it's what i (finally) do for a living. but, i understand, not everyone likes to be analyzed, and some don't like it on behalf of others, even candidates or media pundits. i never understood why people get emotionally invested in people they don't know, or concepts that seem extrapolated at best. but, i do at least have a better appreciation for it after this election. not everyone can be detached all the time. some hopes are aspirational, even those specific hopes seem suicidal.

anyway. i'm sick of politics. i just want to get on with my life. gonna start some new threads.

Kasich is the big loser. Could've been in charge of foreign and domestic policy and become president when Trump gets himself booted from office. All he would've had to do is campaign with and support Trump… yea, probably not worth it.

I'm still in a state of shock.

I haven't said this on the board (I don't think) but my wife worked on Hillary's campaign (through her ad agency, not part of the official campaign). She was the Creative Director on a few of her better ads.

She's a mess today. She's also Canadian. All her family's still there. "Moving to Canada" was always more than a joke or a veiled threat for us.

We've got a lot to figure out.

thanks for sharing, gr. if it makes you feel any better, I think Trump will be a very effective President because he'll have all 3 branches, but he'll likely lose the war of public perception fairly quickly, for what ever that's worth.
