Jesus christ.
I guess the silver lining is that women have reached a level of equality in the US where voting for the first female president means less than voting for who they truly think is the best candidate?

On the flip side, it sets back a hell of a lot of other women's issues in a big way. Those women are, in a sense, condoning "locker room talk" and all.

Yeah, old coworker that's gone on to a better job is an ardent Trump supporter. Basically somehow devolved into me being told that I'll never make the kind of money he does and that I have terrible judgment and that this is a perfect example.

It's weird because we're actually better off than he is currently, but it's amazing how quickly the validation of all of this negative hatred has washed over so many. They feel invincible in just saying whatever they want in the moment.

It's emboldened a lot of people unfortunately to be a dick. I, personally, haven't experienced anything like that today and don't expect to but I'm sure a lot of people will. Trump's win has made targets out of minority groups in the country and especially Latinos and Muslims.

Lil' Vulture took a mental health day today. Her political views are not shared by most of her friends, but they made an agreement among themselves not to be assholes about the election no matter what happened. I hope the agreement sticks. I also hope she has the courage to stand up to any assholes who try to make life difficult for the handful of Latino and Asian and gay students in her school. (The school is in fact majority black.) She said she didn't anticipate problems like we're hearing about in other places because "this is the South, and we're used to it."

This almost goes without saying, but they won't learn that from this, though they should (i'm completely with Gimpy on this). Elected Democrats usually stay in line...and there's not much new blood at all. We're screwed. It's up to your party.

Occupy (and I have no doubt we will be seeing protests again at some point) needs to take a page from the Tea Party and build the grass roots electoral coalitions to start running young candidates for state legislatures and even the House of Reps. The DNC should start helping young enthusiastic candidates with seed money. There are victories to be won here. I think the Democratic leadership also needs to do a better job listening. Elites on both sides are missing something--none of use really understand why so many people want to blow stuff up.

The other reality--if Hillary really did run 5 million votes behind Obama, then there's a big chunk of the answer right there.

Chris Hayes wrote a very important book a few years back called Twilight of the Elites that saw all this coming.

As far as turnout, it would appear to be a lack of appeal to youth. She got them out like March 2016 poll numbers not October 2016 numbers. I noticed in the Bill Clinton speech I saw how bored the youth were unless he mentioned debt free college (then when he explained it they stopped clapping). He had a good speech and those over a certain age seemed very engaged...youth were simply not. I'm not sure she couldve gotten out Obama numbers but she should've done better. It looks like picking Bernie as VP, and thus him having LESS power, was apparently the way she should've gone. Kaine is a competent man who would've been a competent President..people don't give a shit about that obviously. They need to be inspired.

I wa simply wrong with the VP pick, as were they. Their internal polling also utterly failed them in Wisconsin and Michigan.

If I had to guess, I'd say that my parents, my sister, and myself are likely the few, if not only, members of our family who did not vote Trump. I really hope I'm wrong about that, but I'm not looking forward to Thanksgiving.

My entire family voted Clinton so ours will be a bitch fest probably. My dad will have some rants. We luckily don't go to my wife's family for holidays.

Only silver lining of all this from the D perspective is thr Bayhs of the world are probably done. Plus no Clinton hanger ons. I thought they wouldn't be part of the new administration but they're gonna just be pushed away from the party. They better be, anyway.

I don't mean the Neera Tandon types. She's good people. I mean the Cheryl Mills types.

I doubt Bernie would've wanted to be VP. He got exactly what he wanted and then some: he became wildly popular, which allowed him to become a fundraising leviathan and he probably counted on being much more influential in the senate and in the party going forward and he pulled the party to the left. The problem is that he was banking on a Hillary win.

That's why I didn't want him as vp. He'd have way more power in the senate. :(

Kind of comes back to the problem that the Dems never developed a bench. Hillary was going to bring out the base, but they needed a VP who would excite the young folks. It's pretty pathetic that the only person the democrats had for that was a 75 year old senator.

I guess they expected Jay Z and free Katy Perry concerts and stuff to accomplish that, but it's really not that simple.

Cory Booker is not the answer, either.
