Cleveland: The unconventional convention (politics)

In 2000, Gov. Mike Pence (R-IN), then running for an open U.S. House seat, came out against a proposed settlement between government and the tobacco industry, calling it “big government.” In a shocking editorial, he wrote: “Time for a quick reality check. Despite the hysteria from the political class and the media, smoking doesn’t kill.

I mean yeah rational humans that are probably already going to not vote for Trump might see it that way. But for everyone else, he'll just do his thing where he yells and interrupts and name calls and shrugs and rolls his eyes and people will eat it up. In order to keep up and not get verbally steamrolled, Hillary will have to raise her voice, which is not a good choice

I disagree. I think she can remain calm and the adult on the stage and let him hang himself. People don't like Trump, after all, and particularly when he behaves that way. This is not the Republican primary debates, different audience.

And sexist/traditionalist note: trying to bully a woman on stage is a very different thing then making fun of Jeb Bush, trust fund kid.
She is a really excellent, seasoned debater. She held her own against Obama and will be supremely prepared for this. Trump, however, does not seem nearly disciplined enough to go through the hours of debate prep required and she'll have an answer for pretty much everything. Throw in a few dismissive laughs when he's bumbling (but not too dismissive) and you'll get him hot real fast.

My only real concern is if she's too aggressive and the public thinks that's not a good look for a woman. Sidenote, it's more than 2 months to the first one and 100+ days until the election please kill me.

Actor, former underwear model and reality show star Antonio Sabato Jr. — who stumped for Donald Trump on the floor of the Republican National Convention Monday — told ABC News that he "absolutely" believes President Barack Obama is a Muslim.

"We had a Muslim president for 7 1/2 years," Sabato said. "I don't believe he is [a Christian]."

Trump, who spearheaded the birther movement, repeatedly questioned whether the president is an American and if he is a Muslim.

Obama has repeatedly said that he is a Christian.

Sabato said that for the last 7 1/2 years, he has "seen this country take a bad turn" under Obama's leadership. "This guy made it really hard for me to support him," he said about Obama, saying that the president entered office with an agenda to move the country to the left.
He said that police officers and the military don't like Obama and implied that he was not American.

"I believe that he's on the other side ... the Middle East," Sabato told ABC News. "He's with the bad guys."

He said that he was not concerned about vocally supporting Trump in liberal-leaning Hollywood and didn't care if that caused people to judge him.

"So be it," he said.

my least favorite part of this election has been old-guard Republicans acting saddened and aghast like they didn't foster, support and rely on that kind of attitude to fuel their party for decades now.

Literally the reason trump even burst onto the political scene was to question President Obama's citizenship.

the "lock her up" chanting last night was pretty uncomfortable watching live. looking back on it, i don't know. anger and hatred don't really get you anywhere. it is really hard to swallow that one of the two political parties in this country bases a lot of their platform on just that. moreso, that there are so many people that embrace it all.

My favorite was Paul Ryan (while avoiding saying Trump's name) talking about unifying the country, followed by Chris Christie's angry rhetoric that inspired the crowd to repeatedly chant "lock her up."

The only thing that unifies Republicans anymore is hating Hillary. That's not a winning message, and it's not even a lasting message among unregistered or uncertain/unmotivated voters. His time to solidify the base ended a few weeks ago... this is supposed to be the commercial to sell the rest of the country that you're qualified for the job.

BTW, what happened to the jobs/economy theme last night? I watched four speakers and didn't hear a single reference to a Trump plan to create jobs, not even a cursory "he's going to punish companies that send our jobs overseas and save our middle class" boilerplate line.

This article sums things up fairly nicely about Supporters and voting:
http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the ... ers-minds/

Fact-checking Trump didn’t change his supporters minds about him in Swire’s study. After presenting participants with the various statements, the researchers debriefed the volunteers on which of these statements were true and which were false. Even when Trump supporters accepted that some of Trump’s statements were untrue (recognizing that a vaccine doesn’t cause autism, for instance) they did not change their voting preference. In other words, Trump supporters were willing to acknowledge that some of Trump’s statements were lies, but this didn’t alter their enthusiasm for him. “I guess it means that politicians like Trump can spread misinformation without losing support,” Swire said.

To understand why someone might acknowledge that Trump has made outrageous comments and yet still support him, consider what an internet commenter calling himself Bryan wrote. He’s supporting Trump “because a vote for Trump is as close to a punch in the face to the ENTIRE establishment as you can get.” And then there’s this: “Is he a racist misogynistic asshole? Yes. Is he a big-time buffoon who makes a joke of himself? Yes. Is he a narcissistic snob who makes careless controversial statements? Yes,” wrote a Trump supporter at Quora. “But, he will have the independence to implement any legislation without having any external pressure. And that is good for the country.” Someone who has already acknowledged that Trump is a “racist misogynistic asshole” won’t be swayed to drop support for the candidate based on new examples of his being any of those things.

The ironic thing about Christie's speech and reaction is he's more likely to be locked up before Hillary.

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/pre ... owerful-vp

Trump's oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., reached out to a Kasich adviser after the Ohio governor ended his own Republican presidential campaign, promising that if he accepted the vice presidency, Kasich would be in charge of domestic and foreign policy.

The adviser asked what Trump would be in charge of, the report said, and Trump Jr. responded: "Making America great again."

Really though?
