man, sorry bill. But don't take it personally. I know it's hard, but continue to do the right thing. While it is undoubtedly true that the parents are @#%%y at this point, I'm sad to see that word thrown about referring to the kids at this point in their lives, too. The possibilities are many, but I don't think it's right to denigrate them at this point (not that I think any of the folks above were highly sincere with their diagnosis but just shooting out a easy saying.

Now this is something that, unfortunately, I know too much about. It saddens me to the point of tears when my kid- who has a heart of gold once you get to see it- acts in a way that fails to express proper gratitude, or even tact. Today was a perfect example. His Wii gamepad charger exploded (i mean almost literally, with a loud POP) and the 'backup', which was the original that he had gnawed the end into almost oblivion, also failed to work. So it was meltdown city- he wanted to go to gamestop immediately to get a new one, and of course today is the 1 day out of 365 where we couldn't do that. At this time, the neighbor from across the street showed up with a gift for him. Luckily, the neighbor just dropped it off and left, and he opened it and it was a couple of cool fossils. So meltdown part 2- i don't want that gift, why don't they know i want video games, and on and on. Some relatives had already arrived for xmas dinner, and it was quite difficult to be there and attempt to calm him down.

Now while the two situations aren't totally congruous, obviously, but my end point is the same for both- don't give up on the kids at this point. Keep doing the right thing.

Yeah, I was just referring to not wanting kids bc of kids like this. I can't imagine anyone ever suggesting you were a shitty person

Yeah, ditto on this. The very definition of immaturity is experiencing emotions like fear, anger, confusion, disappointment and not being able to express them in clear or socially acceptable ways. That's not say you just accept outbursts like that, but in the best of possible worlds you get to a calmer moment and explain the ways they're expected to react and (maybe) you come to a (probably temporary) understanding.Sadly, I doubt here's been much of that with these kids, or much of a chance for it. I don't think I could have reacted to Bill's situation with anything other than hurt and surprise myself, so I won't make any suggestions. But just like the talks that may or may not pay off, Bill's gift sent the message that someone out there cares about them, and you just have to hope that seeps through somehow.

We had a meltdown about 2 months ago because of a grounding. Fun times.

I think pretty much al kids go through a snotty jerk phase. In the end I think they get past when they realize that acting that way makes their own life even more miserable than those around them.
