couldn't you have just put the car in reverse and made your own getaway? i mean they have the road closed behind you.

I'm thinking the police who were sure to be manning the road closure would have taken a dim view of that maneuver. We could have tried to get off the highway via the median, but I wasn't confident in our minivan's off road capabilities especially since it all looked rather muddy.
