Non-fiction is writing based on facts. Can't (shouldn't?) be assumed to be wholly factual; "true stories" are still stories
We decided to make up a word for untrue stories and then put a "non" in front of to denote true(r) stories. It would make more sense to me if we made the word up for true stories and then use the "non" in front to denote false stories.

i agree pratty. in fact, i was well into my 20s or 30s before I got this right consistently. always was a sore spot for me
