Some practical differences between same sex marriage and polygamy - There would have to be a number of legal accommodations made/hurdles overcome with polygamy that don't with same sex marriage. I'm not a constitutional lawyer obviously, and there might be something more comprehensive than this thing that turned up in a google search, but I'd think these issues would be enough to reject an equal protection claim if brought by some polygamous 'family' without negating the constitutional rationale for gay marriage.

That said, I think if your moral argument for same sex marriage revolves around the concept that adults should be able to form unions that make them happy, and the state should not discriminate based on traditional societal norms, the polygamy or polyamory thing is a real question to think about and not a ridiculous thing to bring up.

yeah, I guess that's what I was thinking, that to answer that question affirmatively, you kinda have to get into the financial aspect - insurance, visiting rights, potential for fraud, etc. - but all those things were pretty much waved away on moral grounds when applied to gay marriage

If we're going to go by what the Bible says, if you divorce and remarry, you are in a polygamous relationship. So, it's pretty widespread and legally recognized.
