Repealing and Vetoing Our Way Forward (Politics Thread)

Seems like bold new visionary concepts of concern like "debt 'n deficit" are being emitted in detectable quantity by majority talkers this am
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

heard the debt's bad. think of the children, smooth. they need to be personally indebted to creditors in order for freedom to reign supreme over our fair land.

Notice that the politics thread was locked as soon as the pipeline burst was mentioned. I think you were right about that conspiracy thing, smooth, only it goes deeper than I feared.

btw, pipeline bursts are more common than they'd like us to know. double conspiracy.

well inviting the Iaraeli PM to speak before congress without going through the state dept is quite a bold move

If there were truly smart people in American politics, the response to the SOTU would not happen. It would be much fun if the opposition party went ahead and made its speech before POTUS. It wouldn't be polite, but it would be effective, if anyone was paying attention.

why did rand paul, ted cruz and some other guy have their own responses? and why did the spanish-language response differ from Ernst's response?

sheesh, run for president on your own time, Rand and Ted.

The most damning evidence of Republican's lack of intelligence comes from the fact that so many of them want to respond to the SOTU. Do they not remember how it pretty much destroyed Jindal's national aspirations? It seemed to damage him as a person too. Since then, a very bright pragmatic governor has turned into a babbling ideological moron.

So the Senate majority voted down 2 Dem amendments to Keystone - one a guarantee that piped oil would be sold in US, the other that it would be built with US steel.

USNay, USNay

nice going, leadership. let's hear how Joanie campaigns on those votes

Honestly, I think the other party response to the SOTU is at best worthless to the out of office party and at worst damaging. I'd almost send a guy up there to just say "pass" and end the night.

The "sell the oil in the US" is a pretty dumb idea, really. The whole point of the pipeline is to send the oil Houston, refine it, and send it off to China or Cuba or wherever.

that's the point of attaching the amendment. most people i talk to don't realize that's what this pipeline is about. it has nothing to do with oil or gas or whatever in the US. it's simply an infrastructure project designed to benefit a few corporations and provide VERY few long-term jobs. perhaps it gets through to a few of them that it isn't about 'lessening our dependence on foreign oil' or whatever.

yes, the amendments are almost entirely about appearances. "The Senate majority OPPOSES selling pipeline oil in the US of A, AND is AGAINST using US steel to build it! Fuckers need to pull the Kochs outta their asses!"

The thing is it may end up being approved without a vote like that passing. It doesn't have to be passed as legislation.

I'd rather we let it up to informed people, i.e. not congress.

holy crap, I can't believe they shot down the U.S. Steel one. That's just plain crazy. How can unions defend the pipeline after that??

Unions in the US haven't exactly proven themselves to be masters of political strategy.

Is this shit for real? Siding with a foreign government against our president (that is itself using this for political ends to get re-elected) when we are trying to prevent nuclear proliferation?
