The whole thing started as a political deal to get MLK day recognized as a holiday. Politicians are pretty gutless, so there's really nothing they can gain by changing it. What's most interesting about all this is Nate Bell is a pretty conservative Republican, representing Mena, a town with a reputation of being rather um, hostile to people with certain ethnic backgrounds. Yesterday was a set back, but there's still a chance something gets done this session.

The Congressional Commission on Military Compensation just released their report and recommendations on how to reform how we are paid and how to reform the retirement system.

http://mldc.whs.mil/public/docs/report/ ... N15-HI.pdf

What I like:

- Giving the opportunity for personnel to leave the service with a retirement plan/401K before serving a full 20 years. I've always hated the all or nothing aspect of the military retirement program.
- Grandfathering current service members into the current system. Only right after 14 years of persistent combat.
- Ensuring the best medical care to wounded servicepeople
- Adding flexibility and expanded choices of doctors under TRICARE. This caused our family serious problems when my wife was diagnosed with her rare genetic disease and forced her to leave the TRICARE system so she could be seen at Hopkins within a month instead of the usual 4-6 month wait under TRICARE.
- Ensure better transition from military service to civilian careers. Honestly, a dead man could do a better job because at least he was cause no harm.
- Better Survivor Benefits. The progam is weak right now.

What I don't like:
- Creating yet another 4-Star headquarters. More bureaucracy and a massive 4-Star staff is going to suck personnel out of already critical jobs and create multiple layers of frustration.

All in all, a good report becuase it gives more options, potentially better service and better compensation.

Mitt Romney is a good man, and I'm happy to have voted for him last time. I am also very happy that he is not running again.

Other than despising almost half the US population, sucking the cash out of companies for his own enrichment (costing thousands their livelihoods) and flip-flopping on any matter of principle for the sake of political expediency, I'm sure he's a great guy, even considering the whole dog on car roof thing. He's got really nice hair and teeth.

Mitt Romney isn't some great fucking guy. He did and said anything to try to get elected.

If seeing Mitt Romney as something less than a great human being is being bitter then, no, it's not hard at all. In fact, it's very freeing. You should try it.

And, by the way, anyone who dismisses out of hand 47% of his countrymen doesn't know the meaning of love of country.

I think it's kinda weird that your initial reaction to the words Mitt Romney is to say he despises half the country because that's a dumb thing to think. But it's the Internet.

Pennsylvania state treasurer quits, will plead guilty to campaign finance charges

Pennsylvania state Treasurer Rob McCord, a Democrat who ran unsuccessfully for governor last year, resigned abruptly on Friday and said he would plead guilty to federal campaign finance charges.

Federal investigators were looking into allegations that McCord solicited campaign contributions in exchange for official acts, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The probe has been going on for several months.

McCord’s attorney, Robert Welsh, said in a statement that McCord would admit to campaign finance violations.

“Mr. McCord will be pleading guilty to certain federal charges to be filed arising out of his attempts in the spring of 2014 to raise campaign contributions from two potential contributors by communicating that if they failed to make campaign contributions, he could make it difficult for them to do business with the Commonwealth,” Welsh said in a statement. “Immediately upon being contacted by federal agents about these matters, Mr. McCord acknowledged that he had overstepped the line of legitimate political fundraising.”

That all moved along pretty quickly

Following Romney's lead, I would also like to state that I will not be running for the Presidency in order to give an opportunity to other leaders to become the next nominee.

I think this will have relatively the same effect on the presidential race.

How crass of JFL, after all the nice things you've written about how we shouldn't question the motives or character of Obama, Clinton, Pelosi et al.

Do I really question politicians' character all that often? Maybe I do, I dunno. I think Obama is a good guy, who just happens to be wrong about most things politically and also kinda sucks at being president.

I guess I think Harry Reid is a total piece of shit, and if you were to say Chris Christie was an asshole, I wouldn't think that was weird. But Romney's a good guy. The vitriolic reaction seemed out of place.
