and by "last August" you mean August 2013

I'd have just said August if I meant August 2014.

But August 2014 was the last August.

It was indeed.

I've always been under the impression that last in this situation refers to the day/month before the most recent one. Which I suppose is a weird thing when you hammer down to the meaning of last, but I think it's more this most recent day/month is August or this past August, whereas last day/month means the one before that one.

Maybe it's just me and the rest of the world thinks last August happened just over 3 months ago, but if someone told me they were reading an article from last August, I'd start from the presumption they meant August 2013 (though would wonder a bit if they meant August 2014).

Yeah, that's a grammatical bitch. I generally go with "this past," if it's in the current calendar year. But the whole thing reeks of relativism. God is dead, etc.

I think "last" and "next" in this context typically mean "____ of last year" or "____ of next year". I dislike the ambiguity though.

The Chinese have already made the big move to alternative energy. And since authoritarian will moves more quickly than the markets, they will soon pass us by and we'll be the dirty bastards. Actually, India will be the dirty bastards, but we'll get most of the blame.

Yes - we can count on authoritarian states to lead the way!

That only goes up to 2010. They've started several initiatives in the last few years. Wikipedia actually has a nice overview. They now lead the world in solar cell production. They'll stumble just like everyone else, but I'll be shocked if they don't pass us in short order. You have to remember they have over 1 billion people. We use much more fossil fuel per capita.

Wikipedia, citing Nature wrote:In 2013, China led the world in renewable energy production, with a total capacity of 378 GW, mainly from hydroelectric and wind power. As of 2014, China leads the world in the production and use of wind power, solar photovoltaic power and smart grid technologies, generating almost as much water, wind and solar energy as all of France and Germany's power plants combined. China’s renewable energy sector is growing faster than its fossil fuels and nuclear power capacity. Since 2005, production of solar cells in China has expanded 100-fold. As Chinese renewable manufacturing has grown, the costs of renewable energy technologies have dropped dramatically. Innovation has helped, but the main driver of reduced costs has been market expansion. [1]

Five incumbent Dem senators in one cycle is really crazy though.

And the seat the GOP won tonight had been held by Democrats for the last 132 years. So that's a nice feather in Bill Cassidy's cap.

China's tiny use of renewable energy is dwarfed by its consumption of fossil fuels. Visit Beijing, where the sky is always gray except for the first 12 hours after a rainfall. Visit Xian, where the sky is yellow and acrid.

You may wave your pompoms over China's 100 fold increase in solar cells, but you know what Billy Preston would say about that. It's not even a token share of their energy.

The US is a polluter, for sure, but dwarfed by China.

Let me try again. China's energy footprint is expanding very quickly because they are moving from a 2nd world country to being a first world country. They have an exploding middle class and their middle class, like all middle classes, loves it's cars and stuff. That costs energy, huge amounts of it. Nobody disputes that their energy consumption is growing and, therefore, their fossil fuel use. Ok, so far?

At the same time, they have turned the corner on alternative energies. They are moving very quickly to transfer their fossil fuel use to alternative technologies. They are doing it much more quickly than markets in the US would allow, especially since the energy market in the US has most government officials in their back pockets.

Citing increased fossil fuel use misses the point and ignores the confounding variable of an exploding middle class. By the way, that middle class will be kicking our asses all over the place in short order if their government can keep it under control.
