Even though we produce more than we consume, and we export more than we import, just this recent drop in prices should be enough evidence. OPEC has decided to maintain production levels in order to allow prices to drop in an attempt to thwart US production efforts. Can we agree that OPEC is the dominant force in controlling oil prices?? And that oil prices have a pretty direct effect on quality of life in the U.S.? And that we have gone to war many times over soley in defense of our oil suppliers?
There are costs and risks associated with our reliance on fossil fuels. The only thing worse would be the absence of this cheap, wonderful, and plentiful fuel source. Think of just about any creature comfort you enjoy, and know that Jesus slaying the dinosaurs made it all possible.

Should you wave your magic wand to make that happen, or shall we use mine? Because it won't happen by tossing money at "alternative energy" developers sucking on the government teat. Consider the subsidy for electric cars. Oh, they are GREAT for the environment, yes? Electricity is clean energy! Pay no attention to the coal-fired power plant.
It's nice to dream about renewable energy. It's particularly fantastic to dream that government will make it happen.
