You guys catch this Crist/Scott thing? Has the state of our political discourse really deteriorated to the point of arguing over a fan? Somewhere Lincoln and Douglas are laughing their asses off.

For a guy that had the largest Medicaid fraud in Florida history, Scott sure is a stickler for the rules.

[Reveal] Spoiler: Tastelessly off-color and inappropriate
Judging by the position of the fan, good thing there isn't a female candidate because the incessant whistling would've been annoying.

A couple of interesting reads that kinda get to the same place even though one is purely anecdotal and entertaining while the other is survey driven.

Help, We're in a Living Hell and Don't Know How to Get Out - Rollicking Esquire story built off of some incredible access/interviews with sitting House and Senate members

Political Polarization in Action: Insights into the 2014 Election from the American Trends Panel - Write up from Pew on an interesting panel they have going

Not sure I buy into all of the causes of dysfunction identified in the first piece, but they both seem worth reading and pondering. Especially if you're writing a dissertation about this stuff, but if you care enough to click on the politics thread you might like them as well.

I found it interesting that there is a higher percentage of liberals in the overall public, but a higher percentage of conservatives in 'likely voters'. the reasons why could fill out five theses.

Thanks for posting the Esquire story, jh. I found it heartening that even many Republicans in Congress seem to think Cruz is a destructive prick… the rest of it was damned depressing.

That Appelbaum article is pretty poor.

We should have created a Marshall Plan for the Russians, and helped out in every way possible to get that country on their feet after 70 years of Communism.

We, at the very least, ignored them completely. We pounded our chests about great we were "winning" the Cold War, we expanded NATO right up to the Russian Border, and we let them simmer in a stew of Islamic extremism (Chechnya and the Caucuses), mob rule (the growth of the Russian energy/military/industrial oligarchy) and didn't really give two shits about the Russian people at all.

We chose to reinforce Eastern Europe and there is merit to that. Hell, I'm 75% Lithuanian and 25% Polish descent, and having a chance to see these countries is a blessing in of itself. But to think we didn't rub the Russians nose in shit after 89 is revisionist history.

Great post, LG. A big part of WW2 was the Germans being humiliated by the result of the first. It only breeded resentment.

There’s more bad news for Democrats who had hoped U.S. Rep. Jon Runyan’s decision to retire would help them snatch his South Jersey congressional seat from Republicans.

House Majority PAC, which aims to help Democrats win House races, is moving its advertising buy from the competitive race to replace Runyan – featuring Republican Tom MacArthur and Democrat Aimee Belgard -- to the safe Democratic seat next door, in Camden County.

That means the PAC will instead be helping state Sen. Donald Norcross (D., Camden) as he runs against Republican Garry Cobb in the contest to replace former U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews, a Democrat who resigned earlier this year. A spokesman for House Majority PAC confirmed the move in an e-mail but provided no further details.

Congressman GARRY COBB. I'm dying here.

It's a 65% Obama district. There's no chance Norcross actually loses, but this is where they're targeting their money.

I am not a politics wiz but that seems incredibly stupid. Dems might actually have a fighting chance in CD-3; CD-1 was wrapped up the second Norcross announced (probably even before).

Without knowing much about the particulars, consider the explanation that political consultants care more about getting paid than winning.

Shooting in Canada's Parliament and a soldier was shot at the War Memorial in Ottawa just a bit over from the Parliament building.

A Canadian soldier was killed on Monday in Quebec when hit by a car driven by a recent Islamic convert, so you have to wonder if this is related either planned or in copycat fashion.

A third confirmed shooting site at a mall in downtown Ottawa. The shooter in parliament looks like he was shot and killed before he did any real damage.

Doesn't seem like very many, if any, people were killed outside of the shooters. But there's a lot of chaos and confusion at the moment.

Voted today. Early voting turnout heavy, particularly in our county, but reportedly across Arkansas. Minimum Wage increase and an Constitutional Amendment eliminating dry counties may be driving up turnout statewide.
