I actually didn't think JH was unreasonable, but if he hates whining, he should realize that college students whine. A lot. I actually threatened to penalize the class for whining. I put it in the syllabus.

I'm winning in inoffensive fashion, but if I had my druthers I'd be a lot more rude. YOU DIDN'T FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS WHY THE FUCK SHOULD THAT BENEFIT YOU INSTEAD OF LEAD TO (minor) PENALTIES

Can't say that to America's youth

(they were required to answer 2 of 3 essays on the midterm, student answered all three...student wants me to count her best two answers rather than averaging all three...I mean the first line of the instructions was "Please answer two of the following three questions"...I wasn't hiding it. I'm not penalizing the student, just counting the shittiest answer as well. If I had to read it and grade it, it counts. Fucking read the goddamn instructions.)

I would've just read the first two and left the 3rd one ungraded. But you were wrong for expecting the student to read the instructions. (My dad claims that when he was in college he once had a test where buried in the instructions (which were apparently lengthy and obvious) it said, "You don't have to take this test" and no one in the class read that far--everyone took the test.

I guess if I had to do it over again I might've just ignored the third one. I dunno. I just hate the whining.

Consider a career change...

I'm with the professor on the career advice. I hate whining, and reading directions is important, but that's kind of an unattractive chip you have on your shoulder there.

Is your role to be a martinet, or to see if there's a way to elicit some signs of learning from students? Girl did EXTRA work (sure, the instructions didn't ask her to) & you're penalizing her for it (and yeah, you ARE penalizing her, unless I'm missing something about your scoring system)?

I dunno. I graded the three essays. Am I supposed to just count the two better ones? At that point I think I'm rewarding not following the directions. She didn't lose any additional points. Each essay counted for 2/3 what they were planned to count as. She hasn't turned in stuff on time all semester so I'm not predisposed to give her breaks. She wrote stuff, I graded it. Seemed to make sense.

Re: your latter comment and Woody's comment, it's an online class so I have no idea what any of them (other than one who came to office hours) look like. I could start a thread about how useless I've found the online teaching experience to be, but on the off chance some student or other person from the university ever stumbled across BSG, I'd like my comments to be scattered among hundreds on Liverpool and Chase Utley to make it more challenging to sort through.

wow, real interesting one on the scanner. caller reports a reckless driver who sideswiped a car. Started in our township, caller was still following, traveled into the next township over. before PD could catch up and stop the vehicle, it wrecked and overturned and caught on fire. Police somehow got her out of the vehicle prior to the fire company getting there. Now they're putting a helo on standby to transport the drive. white female "possible intox" FTW.

they usually don't end like this. typically the caller stops following and the vehicle is never stopped.
