this state senator in Virginia respects life:
You can count on me to never get in the way of you "preventing an unintentional pregnancy." I'm not actually sure what that means, because if it's "unintentional" you must have been trying to prevent it. And, I don't expect to be in the room or will I do anything to prevent you from obtaining a contraceptive. However, once a child does exist in your womb, I'm not going to assume a right to kill it just because the child's host (some refer to them as mothers) doesn't want it.

"JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYS:JPM), the largest U.S. bank, is reducing both its profit target and headcount in 2014, according to a Tuesday presentation. The bank trimmed its profit target to a range of 15 percent to 16 percent return on tangible common equity, down from 16 percent. JPMorgan also said it expected total headcount to fall by 5,000 to 260,000 in 2014."

Jamie Dimon is a fucking douchebag.

From those #s he's "reducing" headcount by not filling openings as people leave.

So its a pretty standard big corporation announcement to signal they're taking "serious" action in light of trimmed profits.

None of this is intended to denigrate the truth of your closing sentiment 8-)

pacino wrote:whither net neutrality:
Comcast, the country’s largest cable and broadband provider, and Netflix, the giant television and movie streaming service, announced an agreement Sunday in which Netflix will pay Comcast for faster and more reliable access to Comcast’s subscribers.

The deal is a milestone in the history of the Internet, where content providers like Netflix generally have not had to pay for access to the customers of a broadband provider.
But the growing power of broadband companies like Comcast, Verizon and AT&T has given those companies increased leverage over sites whose traffic gobbles up chunks of a network’s capacity. Netflix is one of those sites, accounting for nearly 30 percent of all Internet traffic at peak hours.

The agreement comes just 10 days after Comcast agreed to buy Time Warner Cable for $45 billion, an acquisition that would make Comcast the cable provider to nearly one-third of American homes and the high-speed Internet company for close to 40 percent. Federal regulators are expected to scrutinize whether that deal would thwart competition among cable and Internet providers.
It is also unclear whether the Comcast-Netflix deal violates the principles of what is known as net neutrality — where all content providers have equal and free access to consumers. People close to the deal characterize it as a common arrangement. Content companies frequently pay a middleman to carry traffic to a broadband provider, which then moves through its pipes and into a consumer’s home.

In a news release announcing the deal, the companies said, “Netflix receives no preferential network treatment under the multiyear agreement.” Details were not disclosed, but a person close to the companies said it involved annual payments of several million dollars.

The agreement also follows a January ruling from a federal appeals court that struck down the Federal Communications Commission’s net neutrality rules, saying the agency overstepped its authority. This type of deal between Comcast and Netflix might have been forbidden under a liberal reading of the F.C.C.’s rules.

:( they're gonna ruin the internet

Um, I don't hate the idea that providers of streaming video pay a bit more for access to the tubes?

well there's nothing stopping netflix from then in turn jacking their own prices up.

my fear is that eventually these big providers will turn our home internet plans into the tiered data plans that we have for cell phones nowadays.

Does net neutrality change that at all one way or the other? I really don't fully know the nuts and bolts, but my understanding is that net neutrality had to do with content providers and IPOs. There was nothing stopping IPOs from offering tiered data plans to the end user, then or now. And even so, if someone is using tons of bandwidth why shouldn't they pay more?

it means Comcast and AT&T and Verizon are consolidating even more power, which certainly seems like a bad thing.

I'm curious how this affects the SaaS industry, which is a huge chunk of our economy. Traditionally these are companies that run negative margins for their first few years and this is going to make it increasingly difficult to run a business or even get funding.

Netflix's deal has created a precedent for a new startup o have an expected sunken cost to pay to play. They are paying to use the road of the internet and get around a comcast-created car pileup.

Cheney has made a career out of being wrong. Other than getting elected, he's pretty much failed at everything, including being a decent human being.

Cheney was on Fox News yesterday blasting Hagel's plan to cut military spending, his direct quote was along the lines of "We need to ensure we have the ability to invade and occupy countries that pose a threat to us"

Nothing infuriates me more than neocon chicken hawks who have never served, rise to a position of power, and proceed to use the military as pawns for their war games. Really makes my blood boil..

I, for one, hope the right continues to use Dick Cheney as their mouthpiece for why NOT to reduce the size of the military.

Cheney and the other hawks are swimming against the tide here; there are no politically rising Republicans who can really make their case, and most don't want to given how unpopular the recent wars remain. Christie might have been that guy six months ago, but he's obviously keeping a low profile these days. The administration probably was pretty clever to do this now.

was just told at work that if I wasn't in the military then I can't have an opinion about a war. And when the re-built WTC is knocked down again, we'll see why we were in Afghanistan. Talk about a throwback, there.

Tell the numbnuts who said that the military is controlled by the civilians, it's how our system operates.

Always hated morons who say stupid shit like that...it's America, everyone has an opinion about everything. Might not make any sense, but spout off anyway, it's the American way.

There's Tom Cotton. But he might not get elected to the Senate.
