Oh please. It has been a very respectful approach that the R's have taken since losing the presidential bid. Roadblock and undermine has been so good for our citizenry and the economy.

It is good to know that they are upsetting the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans with no end game in mind. Normally, I would applaud them standing by their principles but they don't have any.

That is interesting thinking. Flawed I think. If you are not meeting the requirement for essential, whatever that is, but I think it is someone who makes sure that the place is not pillaged in some cases given the legal requirement not to work without budge under penalty of arrest, fine and jail time, means "you" are unnecessary. Shutdown means out of money and if it is not going to hurt someone (ignore that the food system is reasonably unprotected and unwatched) then you are on the bench.

I think I have learned that 98% of the House and Senate are non-essential.

For clarity, I do think that the Department of Education is not staffed correctly, likely over staffed and that funding should transit to states to implement. EPA, who knows. I do wonder who else got hit really bad. UDSA sounds kind of scary at its current staffing levels (heard an official say that 'food producers generally want to do the right thing). NRC? DOE? Don't know.

As a (state) government employee, that type of thinking is infuriating. I'm an attorney, and my job actually makes money for my client agencies (both through the recovery of accounts receivable and the preemptive work that prevents bad debt from arising). However, in the case of a government shutdown, my client agencies could get by without me, especially considering that they themselves would be shut down. So to that extent, I'm not "essential."

At the same time, there would be an enormous net loss to my client agencies if my position was eliminated entirely.

So anyone making that joke can basically eat a $%&# as far as I'm concerned.

DC is going nuts. Police pursuit down to the capitol ending with shots fired. That said, wild rumors that this is a citizen response to congressional inaction.

dunno if it's true but I just read that MSNBC reported that the capitol police responding to it are not getting paid

I've heard several reporters repeat that Capitol Police told them on Sunday night that they had to work on Monday and weren't going to get paid. I don't know if that's actually what happened or not though.

ETA: This article says they aren't subject to furloughs, but that's not the same as actually getting paid.

The U.S. Capitol Police will be exempt from the furloughs, and House cafeterias are not likely to see closures because they are run by private contractors, though they could scale back their services if the customer volume decreases.

Back to the non-essential serfs and support staff that are already furloughed, I am wondering why there is not a huge presence of people that are just occupying the area around the house and senate office buildings. It is educational to Google words like 'largest government furloughs' and see what returns. Kansas City, NOLA, and others have pretty significant totals. I know a local (NVA) firm furloughed 1800 people the other day.

According to the Secret Service, it started at the White House.

started at the White House apparently when a woman tried to ram a car into a gate. the senate and house evacuated. the car was stopped by a gate at Capital and Second. 4 to 6 shots fired (by who is not clear). The capitol is awash in police cars.
