Guess it wasn’t a snap after all.
Donny Ferguson, communications director and agriculture policy adviser for Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Friendswood, attempted to eat for $31.50 a week an effort to support the $20 billion cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in the now-defeated Farm Bill. The challenge reflects the weekly allotment an individual receives under the SNAP program.
A few days into the challenge Ferguson said he was feeling great on a diet of beans and rice and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
But Ferguson, who bought his food and planned his meals at the beginning of the week, ran into a problem when attempting to travel –
Foiled by TSA. Can’t bring my #SNAPChallenge food on the plane with me, and I’m not paying $50 for the privilege of losing checked luggage.
— Donny Ferguson (@DonnyFerguson) June 21, 2013
His solution? Since SNAP funding breaks down to $4.50 a day, Ferguson limited himself to $9 in meals while traveling.

The Huffington Post noticed Ferguson’s tweet and pointed out that adding $9 to the original bill of $27.58 brought Ferguson beyond the $31.50 budget.
In the end Ferguson spent an additional $8.45 — $6.70 to feed himself and the rest to buy two cans of pork and beans for a local food bank. He spent $36.03 in total, going about 14 percent over budget.

In an email, Ferguson said he didn’t find out about the trip until Tuesday — a few days after he had bought the food and begun the challenge. He said if he would have planned differently had he known about the trip in advance.
While it could be assumed most SNAP recipients don’t have to worry about flying and carry-on charges, unexpected changes in plans can happen to anyone. Someone who relied on the program might not have had the cash to buy additional food if they faced a similar situation.
It hasn’t made a difference to Ferguson. He plans to donate the extra food to a food bank and has taken to referring to himself on Twitter as the “Undisputed Snap Challenge Champion.”

The 2008 House vote to renew the Voting Rights Act was 390-33. #SCOTUS vote to eviscerate it is 5-4.
On “Bloody Sunday” in 1965, in Selma, Alabama, police beat
and used tear gas against hundreds marching in sup- port of African-American enfranchisement. See Northwest Austin, supra, at 220, n. 3 (THOMAS, J., concurring injudgment in part and dissenting in part). Today both ofthose towns are governed by African-American mayors. Problems remain in these States and others, but there is no denying that, due to the Voting Rights Act, our Nationhas made great strides.
Selma Alabama also has a controversial monument to Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate General and KKK Grand Wizard, located in Old Live Oak Cemetery.[17] In August, 2012, plans were announced to build a larger monument, more resistant to vandalism.[18]
