Actually, it sort of makes sense--she needs a car for a month or so. If she were scamming you, I'd think it would be a lot smoother.

I grew up without air conditioning. My dad would respond to repeated requests for air conditioning with "There's only a few nights out of the year where it's too hot to sleep." On those nights, because my room was the warmest in the house, I'd sleep on the porch. We did have ceiling fans and an attic fan. My parents did not get air conditioning at all until the summer I got married (1995). It was an especially hot July that year, and my mother said there was no way she could get ready for the wedding in that heat. So they bought three big window units. Shortly after that, they moved to a house with central air.

I got a window AC unit in my bedroom when I was maybe 12. It was the only one in the house, and I don't think my parents ever got another, until they moved to a place with central AC. My bedroom was on the 2nd floor on the opposite side of the house from the direction the prevailing evening breezes would come, so it didn't effectively cool down on the hottest days.
