Wow. Brush fires are incredibly more dangerous than people realize.

By far largest casualty event for first responders since 9/11

I can't even imagine how that happens. Gah

Especially the kind that burn down half a town's homes, with the fire as yet "zero percent contained" (fire guys on scene)

They didn't live in many parts of the country. Other than that, dunno. Maybe that's the real reason people used to die younger.

What the fuck?

Hot shot crews are elite firefighters who often hike for miles into the wilderness with chain saws and backpacks filled with heavy gear to build lines of protection between people and fires. They remove brush, trees and anything that might burn in the direction of homes and cities.

The crew killed in the blaze had worked other wildfires in recent weeks in New Mexico and Arizona, Fraijo said.

"By the time they got there, it was moving very quickly," he told the AP of Sunday's fire.

He added that the firefighters had to deploy the emergency shelters when "something drastic" occurred.

"One of the last fail safe methods that a firefighter can do under those conditions is literally to dig as much as they can down and cover themselves with a protective – kinda looks like a foil type – fire-resistant material – with the desire, the hope at least, is that the fire will burn over the top of them and they can survive it," Fraijo said

Truth.

I was in the California National Guard in the late 90s and the tank battalion I was part of was activated on state active duty to fight a series of fires in the Northeast of the state.

We had a dozen guys who suffered smoke injuries and one poor bastard had a glowing ember fly into his ear, causing very bad burns to the side of his head and ear.

Fires are no joke, most people on the East Coast simply have no concept about them.

TU might not work out :( Me and the lady friend are seriously considering pushing up our plans to move out West to the Spring after the wedding (2015) since if we wait till I can finish TU one/two courses at a time I'll be in my mid thirties before we can even think of moving out there.

I really do want a chance to live out there before we start a family.

So an old HS friend I haven't seen for awhile just moved in about 6 blocks from me. He works for Tröegs and basically has a permanently stocked fridge. This is probably the moment I'm going to point to in my first AA meeting somewhere down the line.

There have been quite a few instances of entire teams of firefighters getting killed in forest fires. Those blazes can move quickly and they are sometimes unpredictable as to what they will do next. I watched a Book Talk thing on CSPAN a few years ago with the author of a book about a big disaster several years ago. Pretty fascinating.

If you're in a house designed before central air became standard, there's usually plenty of ways to keep it comfortable when it's hot since they were designed for ventilation rather than for being sealed up tight.

Except on those few days where nothing would help, in which case you don't kill yourselves because it would involve moving .

Just have to wait on some people to meet up and talk about how much they loved us. Thank you again to all of you that liked our page and our photos. We used that briefly in our presentation (we already have more social media support than the people who owned it for three years before us), and it definitely helped build our case for who we are and why we'll succeed. This is going to be a total life-changer, and I appreciate the support I got from youse guys. I'm hoping we get confirmation next week, but we definitely nailed it.

So, I haven't had a chance to mention it, but we did get the cafe. We're waiting on the lawyers to finish drawing up the lease, then we can submit our applications for the beer and wine permit, food service permit, all that crap. It's been a little hectic, but we keep checking things off the list. Should be able to get open around the last week of August.
Had a meeting with the creative director of the museum today. We can pretty much cross advertising off our budget. They do a ton of advertising for us. That's like $5000 we can spend on something else.
They're basically subsidizing us in order to keep a good cafe open in there. We're really fortunate to have gotten it.
