NAACP chief slams Solicitor General

The grilled shrimp appetizer had just arrived at the 128th annual press-pols Gridiron dinner Saturday night when NAACP President Benjamin Jealous fell into conversation with a fellow white-tied dinner guest about the Supreme Court’s recent argument over the Voting Rights Act.

The distinguished-looking gentleman told Jealous he thought the NAACP Legal Defense Fund lawyer, Debo P. Adegbile, had done a fine job arguing that the law needed to be continued.

Sure, but what happened to the solicitor general? Jealous wondered aloud, he was just awful.

Well, I am the solicitor general, Donald Verrilli Jr. replied.

Ahahahahahahahaha

Actually I was thinking maybe it would be nice for Christie to be able to appoint people to the State Supreme Court.

He should be able to do that. Unfortunately, the electioneering I suggested would come right along with what you want.

In spite of the fact that Republicans control 24 states at the moment and have not passed such changes in any, you have no doubt that would occur if the GOP took the legislature in New Jersey.

I said "no doubt" they would try, which is what they are doing in other states.

If they were actually trying to pass these things they would be passing.

ok, so they aren't trying to pass the things they are trying to pass. It's just fake legislation, written and advocated by republicans with no interest in passing it, designed to trick people into thinking they are trying to pass it. I don't know why I didn't see it. Should we move this to the conspiracy thread?

When you have unified control of state government, it's pretty easy to pass legislation. If the party was really trying to pass legislation changing how electoral votes are allocated, it would follow that Republican controlled states would be passing the legislation.

It was an idea floated that most states backed away from as quickly as it appeared.

Seems like an elevated level of concern from generally dispassionate foreign policy observers (eg Nick Kristof and the AP) that the Norks might do something super stupid soon that causes the deaths of many people.

In Pennsylvania?

Besides, what I said was that they'd try it and we'd have to hear about how it was a good idea to disenfranchise the majority of voters. The GOP tried a number of different electioneering tactics in different states this past election cycle. I will be completely shocked if it doesn't continue. They'll get away with whatever they can away with, even if it means the majority of voters are affected negatively. Actually, what I should say is "the majority of voters who vote democratic." Funny how these ideas that the GOP apparently isn't REALLY trying to pass just happen to affect minorities and other typically democratic voters more than they affect GOP voters. But again, I'm glad they aren't REALLY trying to pass all these laws they keep writing and voting for. I guess it's too bad for them that people actually hear about these things and try to put a stop to them. But I guess you are actually trying to say that they are stopping themselves from passing the laws they are writing and supporting. Good to know. LOL.

Yeh, I wouldn't want to be in S Korea right now. It looks like the North wants to flex its muscle, if for no other reason than to see how everyone will react.

Hugo Chavez went through 200 cabinet ministers in 10 years.

He talked to the public every two days on TV for an average of FOUR hours, and interrupted every program on every channel for it. He talked a total of 54 FULL days during his tenure. sheeeesh

Ahmadinejad was blasted in some newspapers and by conservative politicians in Iran for embracing Hugo Chavez's mother in a consoling hug at his funeral. HE TOUCHED A WOMAN WHO WAS NOT HIS WIFE OR MOTHER. DEAR GOD, UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN!

The question for me is, what will the republicans say to the dems this time to trick them into believing the NSGOP (not so grand party) will be reasonable? They seem to find something every time, to the point that sometimes I wonder if the dems are allowing themselves to be tricked for contributions or something.

Harry Reid fucked this up, almost certainly intentionally. He's had his chances; he didn't take them - for some reason....

Harry Reid #$!&@ this up

i copied this just so i can paste this when applicable in the next 100 posts in the political thread. how are all our leaders on both sides in Congress, except Pelosi, so bad?

on a side note, both Holder and Mary Jo White have both said they basically have to take into account, before prosecuting, whether a bank is basically 'too big to jail'. gutless.

U.S. plans to let spy agencies scour Americans' finances:
The proposed plan represents a major step by U.S. intelligence agencies to spot and track down terrorist networks and crime syndicates by bringing together financial databanks, criminal records and military intelligence. The plan, which legal experts say is permissible under U.S. law, is nonetheless likely to trigger intense criticism from privacy advocates.

Financial institutions that operate in the United States are required by law to file reports of "suspicious customer activity," such as large money transfers or unusually structured bank accounts, to Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

The Federal Bureau of Investigation already has full access to the database. However, intelligence agencies, such as the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, currently have to make case-by-case requests for information to FinCEN.The Treasury plan would give spy agencies the ability to analyze more raw financial data than they have ever had before, helping them look for patterns that could reveal attack plots or criminal schemes.

More than 25,000 financial firms - including banks, securities dealers, casinos, and money and wire transfer agencies - routinely file "suspicious activity reports" to FinCEN. The requirements for filing are so strict that banks often over-report, so they cannot be accused of failing to disclose activity that later proves questionable. This over-reporting raises the possibility that the financial details of ordinary citizens could wind up in the hands of spy agencies.

they already overreport, and now they want the ability to access EVERY transaction without any stated purpose other than 'terrah'?

and yeah right they'll only check $10,000+. just look at what happened to Spitzer to know that's not the case.
