This is similar to my first car:

I don't know how to change a tire. Never had to. I do think if I had the internet with me, I could get it done though. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I don't have a jack.

same here. I think and hope I could if I had to, but I haven't, so who knows

I've only driven a car about four times in the last four years anyway, so I'm pretty dangerous with one in general

Changing a tire is real easy. Most (all?) cars come with a jack and a tire iron and a spare, which is all you really need unless you have nice rims and have wheel locks. I'm not a car guy by any means, but I can change a tire on the side of the road in ~5min. Any reasonably strong person should be able to do it without much difficulty.

Well, with this caution: if you haven't done it in years (on that car) and you don't have a very good lug wrench (often the one supplied with the jack is not very good), it's going to be very tough, particularly if the last time the tires were changed was at a shop, using a power driver to tighten the nuts [/pip].

Knowing how might not help you then (and true, the knowing how is not difficult). It really is a good idea to do this once in a while, just so you know where everything is, and so the lugs are not overly tightened. Or rent out your car to neighborhood teenagers who need to learn this (I'd double check the lug nuts.) It's much better for your first time to be on a lazy Saturday afternoon than on the shoulder of the interstate in the dark (more /pip].

I think there's a lot of little things that we take for granted when changing a tire. I think everyone should have someone work with them on their first attempt. Like, where are the jacking points on your car? Where is the jack, even?? Make sure the car is in park with the parking brake securely engaged. Even chock one of the other tires (especially if not on flat ground). NEVER put any of your body parts under a raised vehicle. Like Paul says, break the lugs loose before you raise the vehicle. Don't tighten them all the way (a little more than finger tight) while the car is in the air. When the car is back on all four wheels, tighten the lugs in a star sequence.

Simple?? Yes. But it can be dangerous if one is not versed in the process.

Also, if you're using a jack, and a lugnut rolls under your car, don't crawl under the car to retrieve the lugnut.
