excuse me? Have you ever worked a shitty food service job? It's degrading to the nth degree besides being completely emotionally and physically draining AND on top of that you don't exactly reap financial rewards.

No, I'm really not. "Hard" isn't a function of mental exertion.

I've never waited tables, so I will not weigh in on what it is or is not harder than.

What I can say is that, shockingly, I understand Jeff's point. It's not particularly easy to run any major business concern, and I am sure Mitt Romney wasn't coming home at 5 every night when he was the head of Bain Capital, just as I am sure that when he was "home," he was often still "at work" mentally. There are a lot of hours involved, and even in your free time your attention is often still partially on what's going on at work, how things can improve, etc. When you have a bottom-of-the-rung job, at the very least, when you are not at that job, there is no reason to be thinking about that job. I think that is the big difference. I.e., nobody gives waiters, grocery store clerks (like I was), or Wal-Mart greeters BlackBerrys.

Monkeyboy, I of course agree with your politics in a broad way, but your hatred of Romney sometimes reaches fever pitch. That's fine, but I think you have to accept it, own it, and understand that others may occasionally call you out on it.

you guys are comparing apples and oranges. i spent a year working 60+ hours a week splitting time between a bakery and a warehouse. i was physically tired all the time, didn't make great money, and barely had any free time to spend with my friends/gf outside of watching tv for an hour or two. however, i'd go to work high all the time and you could do the jobs without thinking too much. now i work 30-50 hours a week depending on the season, i sit behind a computer during all that time trying to look over and decipher data into a forecast. i'm taking up to 100 calls a day from clients and i'm always on my toes. on busy days, i leave work and my brain just feels like it has no capacity to process any more information and i usually just want to lie down because i'm so mentally tired. however, when i leave i have ample time to meet up with friends/workout/hike/etc...

the point is, the jobs are different kinds of hard. however, i'd argue that the financial compensation for most desk job puts it head a shoulders above labor. not to mention the fact that when i was working 60+ hours a week between 2 jobs, i didn't have health insurance so that sucked.

I'll agree with you about your back and feet hurting, but emotionally draining? Come on. Social work is emotionally draining. Being a divorce attorney is emotionally draining.

And it's not even particularly degrading, unless you're working at Hooters. I nearly always had a good rapport with my tables. Sure, some people sucked, but that's the case with nearly any service industry job.

Seriously, this conversation is ridiculous. Can we all agree that waiting tables is a (somewhat) physically demanding job and a difficult job for people who aren't good at multitasking, and leave it at that?

As for being a waiter. It's honest work, it sucks taking crap from jerks. But it's not "hard". It's not backbreaking. Working 90-100 hours a week taking all manner of shit from harried/stressed clients and staring at a computer screen till your eyes bleed... much harder.

This is an incredibly stupid discussion, but being a waiter, or working in retail, or customer service or thousands of other "menial" jobs is nothing other than "taking all manner of shit from harried/stressed clients" all the time, often on your feet all day, and there are thousands of other jobs out there where you really do face the possibility of real life actual bleeding and not some overblown metaphor of the perils of scanning a vdu for hours. Which, needless (right?) to say, Mitt Romney never did anyway. Doing any of these jobs well takes a lot more effort for the same amount of time than any field Romney has been involved in.

I have no problem rewarding people for specialized knowledge, contacts or managerial skills, and Romney has done a great deal with the resources he's been provided, which is all you can ask of anyone. Hard work certainly helps with success but to see such a simple correlation existing is just to be far more naive and simplistic than an intelligent person such as yourself knows to be true. I know you want to be seen as a straight shooter. A big help for that would be to call yourself on your own bullshit.
