David Brooks

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/18/opini ... omney.html

Romney, who criticizes President Obama for dividing the nation, divided the nation into two groups: the makers and the moochers. Forty-seven percent of the country, he said, are people “who are dependent upon government, who believe they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to take care of them, who believe they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it.”

This comment suggests a few things. First, it suggests that he really doesn’t know much about the country he inhabits. Who are these freeloaders? Is it the Iraq war veteran who goes to the V.A.? Is it the student getting a loan to go to college? Is it the retiree on Social Security or Medicare?

It suggests that Romney doesn’t know much about the culture of America. Yes, the entitlement state has expanded, but America remains one of the hardest-working nations on earth. Americans work longer hours than just about anyone else. Americans believe in work more than almost any other people. Ninety-two percent say that hard work is the key to success, according to a 2009 Pew Research Survey.

Sounds like a quote about the Clinton White House.

This is the class warfare the Republicans like to call out. To the disabled vet, the Republicans say: "You're a moocher." To your grandparent living on social security and disability, they say: "Get a job." To the family of 4 trying to scrape by on $25K a year, they say: "Work another job."

It's class warfare to be sure, but the inconvenient truth for the Republicans is that it starts from the top, not the bottom. To them, the 47% are nothing but a bunch of bloodsucking, lazy minorities gaming the system.

as one of those 53% paying federal income tax, i still like all yall mooches :D

he seems to conflate NOT MAKING ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY FEDERAL INCOME TAX with BEING A MOOCH. this is a tired, false argument. kinda sad that such a smart man is apparently using such a dumb argument.

He uses the argument because it resonates with his base.

but if you just think for a SECOND, you'll realize that NO ONE is trying to make less money so they dont have to pay federal income tax. it's just absurd

plus, all those other taxes people pay

Unlike the deregulators, hedge fund heroes, military contractors and oil barons. If you added the takings of every welfare cheat in American history, you might equal a couple days of the "honest graft" the Rs have done so much to enable.

I once saw Charles Murray (The Bell Curve, Coming Apart) speak at Georgetown, around 1999. For those who don't know Murray, he's basically a well mannered racist. He talked about how the underclass had a separate, lesser morality than "the rest of us." I challenged him on the premise, citing some examples of corporate malfeasance then current, and suggested that underclass crime actually could be read as an emulation rather than a rejection of elite capitalist "morality."

I'd go further now. The real volume "takers" are at the top, and the worst of them have become completely disconnected from the values most of us hold as well as blind to the consequences of their actions. It's no shock they're drawn to Ayn Rand, who created a moral structure that doesn't just excuse but actually celebrates their sticking it to everyone else--though I doubt she'd have much good to say about the carried interest deduction. John Galt wasn't a rentier.

perhaps newsweek shouldnt have used a hatemonger to write their front page piece about 'muslim rage'. maybe someone with more nuance.

and maybe they should finally just change and call themselves 'opinionweekbecausewearetryingtomovecopiesatairports'

Guy who hosted 47 pct fundraiser is a Sixers owner

Of course, so are Will & Jada. Article also mentions the guy parties with Russell Simmons and hosted some kind of orgy in the Hamptons

North Korea said Tuesday that it had signed an agreement with Russia settling an estimated $11 billion debt owed by Pongyang that dates back to the Soviet era.
The North's state news agency KCNA said the agreement was signed Monday in Moscow, but gave no details of the terms involved.

Best part about the Romney quote is the way some on the right are cheering him on. I'm feeling the possibility of taking back the house. If only Howard Dean were in charge of the DNC.
